Hollywood icon Harrison Ford has indicated that he may be nearing retirement, following his recent remarks at a panel promoting the television series Shrinking. The Star Wars and Indiana Jones star, known for previously dismissing the idea of stepping away from acting, hinted he might be more open to ending his career soon after the success of the show.
At Apple TV’s first press day held at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, Ford spoke about his experiences on Shrinking. During a discussion moderated by Ashley Nicole Black, the 83-year-old was asked to share the deeper questions he has contemplated since joining the project.
In comments captured by The Hollywood Reporter, Ford asked,
“Where do you go from here? The kind of work that we’re able to do is remarkable given the tools we have to work with, and the notion that lies behind this series.”
He then added,
“And if it was all over here, that would be sufficient. This has been a different kind of job for me, and I’ve been doing this for a long time.”
Further expressing his connection to the role, Ford noted,
“This is very special and it really nurtures me and makes me feel like what we’re doing has value and importance. I look for that in my life and I’m happy to have found it here.”
These reflections imply that Ford might be ready to conclude his acting journey with his portrayal of Dr. Paul Rhoades on the series. Created by and starring Jason Segel, Shrinking features Ford as a therapist and senior colleague of Segel’s character Jimmy Laird, who is contending with Parkinson’s disease. The show is currently in its third season, with a fourth season already approved by Apple TV+.
Ford’s Earlier Remarks on Retirement and Longevity in Acting
Ford has addressed the topic of retirement before, having previously stated that he had no immediate intention to stop acting and planned to continue working as long as possible. Asked about his plans to retire, he once commented,

“That’s one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor. They need old people, too, to play old people’s parts.”
Earlier this year, while promoting the second season of his Yellowstone prequel 1923, Ford was questioned about when he might quit acting. He responded simply, “When you forget my name.” In a separate interview, he also admitted he [hasn’t] thought about it in depth, indicating an ongoing uncertainty about retirement.
Significance of Ford’s Statements and Future Prospects
Harrison Ford’s recent remarks suggest a shift in his outlook on his career’s future, hinting at a readiness to embrace retirement after a long tenure in Hollywood. His role on Shrinking appears to have provided him with a meaningful and fulfilling experience, possibly shaping his decision to end on a high note. As the show moves into its fourth season, fans and industry observers will likely watch closely to see if Ford chooses to step back from acting or continue to take on roles that resonate personally.
