Paramount Pictures has scheduled the release of David Corenswet’s upcoming NFL biopic for December 25, 2026. The film centers on John Tuggle, known as “Mr. Irrelevant,” whose brief career with the New York Giants left a lasting impact despite its tragic end.
Story of John Tuggle’s NFL Journey
The movie tells the story of John Tuggle, who was selected as the final pick in the 1983 NFL draft by the New York Giants. This last-pick status earned him the nickname “Mr. Irrelevant,” a term typically used for draftees released before the season begins. Although most players with this title face early career setbacks, some exceptions—such as Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers, Jacque MacKinnon from the San Diego Chargers, Ryan Succop with the Kansas City Chiefs, and Marty Moore of the New England Patriots—have enjoyed successful careers.
Tuggle’s NFL career lasted only one season, during which he earned the New York Giants Special Teams Player of the Year award in 1983. Unfortunately, his playing days were cut short after he was diagnosed with cancer, which led to his death on August 30, 1986, at age 25.
Previously, ESPN featured Tuggle’s story in their 30 for 30 short film titled The Irrelevant Giant.
Creative Team and Cast Behind the Biopic
The John Tuggle biopic is directed by Jonathan Levine, known for films like Long Shot, 50/50, Warm Bodies, and The Night Before. Levine also co-produces the film alongside Gillian Bohrer. The screenplay is penned by Nick Santora, whose credits include Punisher: War Zone and television series such as FUBAR and Reacher.
David Corenswet stars as John Tuggle, with Michael Shannon cast as Bill Parcells. The film also features performances from David Krumholtz and Isabel May.
