Ethan Hawke revealed that during their early acting days, he and Billy Crudup were frequent competitors for the same roles. Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on February 4, Hawke explained that while Crudup has since become a friend, that rivalry shaped their beginnings.
“happens to be a friend of mine — but not at first.”

Hawke described how they often auditioned for identical parts, which created tension in their youth. He said,
“Because we used to go up — we used to audition for everything [together],”
and added,
“And you know when you’re a kid, you think you’re against everybody, right? You don’t understand that there’s room for everybody to find themselves, to do their thing.”
Behind the Scenes of Their Audition Battles
Hawke shared memories of the intense competition between them, recalling that he could sometimes hear Crudup’s audition from outside the room.
“So I would see him at every audition. I’d often have to be outside the room, and listen to him do the scene before me. And he was so good. It was so irritating.”

This ongoing contest eventually involved significant career moments. Hawke recounted missing out on a pivotal opportunity to star in a Tom Stoppard play due to his movie commitments, which was then awarded to Crudup.
“In fact, I was offered a play once — I think he knows this — and I had to say no to it, because I was doing a movie,”
Hawke explained, continuing,
“It was a Tom Stoppard play. And they gave him the part, and then his career blew up.”
Jokingly, Hawke admitted to sometimes wishing he could reverse those events.
“And sometimes, I just want to go back in time, take the part, to stop his career.”
