Idris Elba Opens Up on Joining Masters of the Universe Reboot

Idris Elba has expressed enthusiasm about joining the cast of the upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot, revealing that He-Man played a significant role in his childhood. The 53-year-old actor, known for his role in Luther, is part of a star-studded ensemble including Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and Jared Leto as Skeletor. Elba said he was excited to get involved because the original cartoon series meant a lot to him while growing up.

A Nod to 1980s Nostalgia and Original Inspirations

Elba shared with Empire magazine that He-Man held a special place in his early years, especially since his family couldn’t afford Star Wars toys, which led him to enjoy the more affordable He-Man figures.

“So I had He-Man, She-Ra, Battle Cat … The cartoons were always a little bit more fun, a bit more camp, a bit more out-there.”

The new film draws inspiration from the 1987 original, which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, itself based on Mattel’s toy line that sparked the popular television series from the 1980s. This reboot aims to capture the essence of that era while bringing fresh energy to the story.

Elba’s Role and Collaboration with Director Travis Knight

In the reboot, Elba takes on the role of Man-At-Arms and was eager to join after hearing director Travis Knight’s vision. Elba praised Knight’s approach to honoring the look and feel of the original film.

“Travis, who’s an incredible director, wanted to pay homage to the aesthetic of the original. I was all for that. Though it made me think: ‘S***, I’ve gotta get into the gym!’”

Jared Leto’s Skeletor and the Villain’s Complex Portrayal

Director Travis Knight also detailed casting Jared Leto as Skeletor, emphasizing the actor’s personal connection to the character. Knight described Skeletor as a multifaceted villain who is simultaneously intimidating and vulnerable.

“He wanted to swing for the fences. And ultimately we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity.”

Leto’s enthusiasm for the role helped shape a distinctive version of the character, aligning with Knight’s desire to create a fresh yet faithful interpretation of one of the franchise’s iconic antagonists.

Anticipation Builds Ahead of the 2026 Release
