Sony Pictures Animation’s new film GOAT brings to life a world where animal athletes compete in the popular sport of roarball, dominated by the largest players. At its heart is Will Harris, a determined young goat with big dreams of joining the pros despite constant reminders that smaller players don’t belong on the court. Caleb McLaughlin lends his voice to Will, embodying the character’s relentless drive and connection to his role models, capturing the essence of perseverance and talent against the odds.
The Underdog Story of Will Harris in GOAT
GOAT follows Will Harris, a passionate roarball player eager to prove that size doesn’t determine skill or success. Set in an all-animal environment, roarball is a sport where the biggest animals usually reign supreme, making Will’s ambition to compete among them a challenging and inspiring journey. From the outset, Will faces skepticism, but his unwavering belief in his abilities motivates him to challenge the status quo.
Caleb McLaughlin on Bringing Will’s Character to Life
Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role in Stranger Things, finds a strong personal connection with Will Harris, relating to his aspirations and emotional drive.
“Will is a hero in his own world,”
McLaughlin says.
“He’s got this bigger vision for himself and for the people he loves, and that’s what keeps him going. He’s inspired by the role models around him, and I totally connect to that idea of being on a personal quest with a lot of heart behind it.”
McLaughlin also enjoyed infusing the character with distinctive personality traits.
“One of the most fun parts for me was finding Will’s signature moments—like his unique laugh or those improv bits that really capture his personality,”
he shares.
“I think everyone has their own version of that little signature quirk—their own goat ‘baa,’ if you will. Discovering Will’s personal touch really made those scenes enjoyable.”
Creative Inspiration Behind Will’s Character Design and Movement
Director Tyree Dillihay emphasizes that Will represents youthful ambition and the hunger to pursue dreams, reflecting the spirit of a new generation.

“He doesn’t have a route to get there but he’s hungry, passionate, hardheaded. He wears an armor of courage and strength and go-get-it-ness. I love that about Will.”
Daniel Pozo, who heads character animation, drew from iconic basketball players to craft Will’s movement and style. Pozo highlights how Will’s confidence and swagger echo real-life athletes.
“He’s a teenager with a lot of confidence—he’s got swag,”
Pozo explains.
“We looked at references like Kobe Bryant when he was in high school and Caleb’s own movie performances. He exudes so much confidence in how he walks. We started with that and layered in these idiosyncratic behaviors that basketball players tend to have—they seem to always have a ball passing between their hands, always in movement.”
Will Harris’s Story as a Universal Pursuit of Dreams
Co-director Adam Rosette sees Will’s journey as a reflection of anyone’s dream and determination. He believes GOAT’s narrative connects beyond sports to speak to all who aspire for something greater.
“It represents what it’s like to have a dream, not only what it’s like to play sports,”
Rosette remarks.
“It’s about Will’s dream, which just happens to be becoming a pro roarball player. If you’ve ever had a dream—something that you aspire to be—this movie is for you. There’s heart, there’s hustle and humor.”
