Before his untimely death in 2020, Chadwick Boseman was steadily rising to become a major force in Hollywood, delivering standout performances in films such as Captain America: Civil War and the groundbreaking Black Panther. His portrayal of T’Challa not only captured global attention but also positioned him for future award recognition. His passing, following a private battle with cancer, shocked fans and the industry alike, leaving Marvel Studios with a difficult choice regarding the franchise’s future.
The Evolution of the Black Panther Franchise Post-Boseman
After Boseman’s death, Marvel decided not to recast the role of T’Challa. Instead, his character was written off-screen, and the Black Panther mantle was passed to Shuri in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Shuri remains positioned as the hero moving forward, with plans for T’Challa’s son, Toussaint (also known as T’Challa II), to inherit the role in upcoming MCU projects like Avengers: Doomsday.
Ryan Coogler Reflects on Working with Boseman and Lessons Learned
Director Ryan Coogler, who collaborated with Boseman on Black Panther, shared deep personal insights during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his new film, Sinners. Coogler confessed how he initially struggled to appreciate the creative process during their work together, burdened by self-doubt and stress.
Engaging with him on an artistic level, conversations that will forever just be between me and him — I was about 30 years old, stressed, completely out of my mind, sleep-deprived, convinced that the movie wasn’t going to work,
Coogler recalled.
I robbed myself of truly enjoying that privilege.

Even of sitting there and enjoying the countless Chadwick Boseman takes, because he didn’t have a bad take. So when he passed, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, how much stuff have I not allowed myself to enjoy because I was in my own head — feeling like I was unworthy?’
I’m going to take the lessons from Chad for the rest of my life, bro,
Coogler added.
That includes all of this. I have to see the good in things, see the value in things, and not let impostor syndrome or guilt or negativity rob me of moments with my cast, who I love — or with folks who want to say, ‘Hey, good job.’
The Challenge of Continuing Black Panther Without Boseman
Leading Black Panther: Wakanda Forever presented an emotional challenge for Coogler. He described the process as deeply painful, as the loss of Boseman left a void akin to losing a vital source of light.
We had to work from the place of being brokenhearted, or else it wouldn’t have got done. Me and Chad were getting closer, so it was like a wound to the heart. It was like somebody had taken the sun away and we were all these planets floating.
I learned that I was more resilient than I give myself credit for — I’ll say that was the biggest thing,
he reflected.
And that movie gets watched at home so much more than the other Panther did. I think about that: People may be watching when they want to feel something specific.
Accolades and Anticipation for Future Projects
The original Black Panther film received significant recognition at the Academy Awards, earning a Best Picture nomination and winning for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. Now, with Sinners, Coogler is again in the spotlight, with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige expressing strong support for his work.
The music was incredibly meaningful to me, and I told Ryan that my jaw was on the floor. It should win best picture for that alone,
Feige remarked.
The Academy doesn’t always, in my opinion, recognize the movies that are most relevant for audiences today. But, boy, did they hit it with this one.
Looking ahead, Coogler’s next project will be the third Black Panther film, expected to release around early 2028, following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Enduring Legacy of Ryan Coogler and Chadwick Boseman
Ryan Coogler’s reflections highlight how deeply Chadwick Boseman’s spirit and work ethic affected him, teaching lessons about resilience and the importance of appreciating creative collaboration. As the Black Panther franchise continues to evolve, the legacy of Boseman’s performance remains a guiding force. Fans and audiences alike await the next chapter scheduled for the MCU, a story shaped by both loss and hopeful continuation.
