Adrien Brody’s Hilarious TurboTax Spot Steals Super Bowl Show

Intuit TurboTax returned for its 13th consecutive Super Bowl ad in 2026 with a comedic mockumentary featuring actor Adrien Brody, blending humor with an “un–Super Bowl” style. This creative approach aimed to draw attention to TurboTax’s expert-led tax filing services during the event on February 8th.

The campaign launched with a teaser that showed Brody preparing intensely as “The Expert,” followed by a 45-second spot aired just before halftime, and a 30-second teaser before the game. These parts together form a two-minute extended cut now available on TurboTax’s digital channels, retail outlets, and in movie theaters nationwide.

Concept and Creative Direction Rooted in Cultural Insight

TurboTax’s marketing team, led by Trevor Kelly, VP of the consumer group, aimed to highlight the combination of AI and human experts as the core benefit in this year’s campaign. Unlike previous years that focused on an expert-led alternative, this campaign put the spotlight directly on the brand’s expert support.

The creative agency R/GA drew inspiration from popular Hollywood mockumentaries and the satire of dramatic entertainment versus the mundane reality of taxes. Trevor Kelly explained the core concept by describing it as an

“unparalleled combination of advanced agentic AI and actual human expertise”

.

Kelly added on the creative spark behind the mockumentary style,

“When you combined those two ideas… it was magical,”

emphasizing how the tension between drama and financial seriousness became the central idea for the campaign.

Adrien Brody’s Dramatic Persona Contrasted with Tax Realities

Ryan O’Keefe, group creative director at R/GA, noted that the campaign hinged on using Adrien Brody’s reputation for intense, dramatic roles to create an amusing contrast. Choosing Brody wasn’t about celebrity shine; it was a test of whether his dramatic presence could bring levity to something as dry as tax filing.

O’Keefe explained,

“That tension became the idea. Instead of inventing drama, we challenged its absence by casting one of the most dramatic actors working today. [Casting] Adrien Brody wasn’t about celebrity, he was proof that if he couldn’t bring drama to TurboTax, then the brand promise holds under any pressure.”

The script was crafted especially for Brody, utilizing his serious screen persona to heighten the humor by having him play a knowingly self-aware version of himself training for the TurboTax Expert role. O’Keefe shared,

“His reputation for intense, serious roles made the idea of him playing a self-aware version of himself training to play a TurboTax Expert inherently funny. That contrast let us keep the writing deliberately dry, restrained, and un–Super Bowl. Luckily for us, from day one, Adrien was fully in on the joke and we were grateful to be trusted with his first real step into comedy in this way.”

Collaboration with Award-Winning Director Enhances Vision

This marked Brody’s first Super Bowl appearance in 15 years, and Trevor Kelly expressed the honor of working with an actor so selective about his projects. Kelly noted,

“and he is rightfully particular about all of his projects, so it was an honour to work with him,”

also praising the involvement of director Craig Gillespie from MJZ.

Gillespie’s direction complemented Brody’s style perfectly with a nuanced comedic sensibility. Ryan O’Keefe described Gillespie as

“the perfect counter to Adrien’s dramatic intensity,”

adding,

“He knows exactly when to push, when to step back, and when to save everyone from themselves. ‘The Expert’ needed that kind of director; someone who could protect the idea from overthinking while making it all feel effortless.”

Trevor Kelly recalled the on-set dynamic, describing it as an “incredible” experience, highlighting Brody’s talent for improvisation. Kelly said,

“He is truly such a gifted actor, and a lot of what you see in the final spot was his improvising. He had a lot of fun with this comedic role and has shared as much in interviews! He is an incredible comedic actor, along with being an incredible dramatic actor, and that has shown in a lot of his recent work, including our Super Bowl spot.”

Strong Client-Agency Relationship Enables Creative Freedom

TurboTax and R/GA’s ongoing partnership allowed the agency significant freedom to develop the campaign’s bold, restrained tone. Ryan O’Keefe explained that aligning early on a clear concept and committing to protecting it was essential to the campaign’s success. He said,

“Year after year, we’ve learnt that the strongest work comes from aligning early around a clear idea and committing to protect it. It’s that trust that allowed us to take a more confident, more restrained swing this year and let the simplicity of the idea do the heavy lifting.”

Despite the confidence in the idea, O’Keefe acknowledged the challenge in maintaining it, remarking,

“because you know that’s when great work is most at risk,”

and

“The challenge quickly became less about finding the idea and more about protecting it.”

This mutual trust between the brand and agency was crucial for preserving the campaign’s sharpness through production and launch.

Appealing to Younger Audiences with Modern Tax Solutions

TurboTax’s ‘Now This Is Taxes’ platform has increasingly targeted Gen Z, incorporating music and cultural references relevant to younger consumers. Trevor Kelly pointed out that this campaign resonated with that audience, partially due to Adrien Brody’s recent rise among younger viewers following his acclaimed 2024 role in ‘The Brutalist,’ distributed by A24 Films.

Kelly explained,

“In recent years, Adrien has caught the attention of younger audiences, particularly following his acclaimed performance in the 2024 film ‘The Brutalist’, which was distributed by A24 Films and for which he won numerous awards,”

and continued,

“As many Gen Z look to file their taxes for the first time, or are in the market for live tax support, we are excited to highlight Adrien’s performance and TurboTax experts as the gold standard in a modern, stress-free tax filing experience.”

He emphasized TurboTax as a solution to outdated tax filing methods by stating,

“So many consumers still settle for doing their taxes in a very antiquated way, and TurboTax is the antidote to that because we have our unparalleled combination of AI and HI (human intelligence). The digital platform is incredibly easy and then enhanced with human expertise. And we’ve used the largest stage possible to get this message out and create something really fun and memorable.”
