Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, best known for their roles as Thor and Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are joining forces again in the new heist thriller Crime 101, which releases this Friday. The film presents a fresh challenge for the actors, as they play opposing characters—a jewel thief and a detective—stepping away from their usual superhero personas in a tense, dramatic setting.
A Shift from Superheroes to Crime Drama
While Hemsworth and Ruffalo have shared camaraderie and comedic moments in Marvel movies, their roles in Crime 101 are much more conflicted. Hemsworth plays Mike, a skilled yet troubled jewel thief, while Ruffalo portrays the determined detective pursuing him. This role reversal pushed both actors into unfamiliar territory, requiring them to explore a different kind of dynamic than the one audiences usually see on screen.
Challenges of Acting Opposite a Close Colleague
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hemsworth reflected on the unique experience of working with Ruffalo outside their usual friendly team roles. He said,
“I’ve had so much fun in the Marvel films working with everyone, but that felt incredibly special, that relationship, because we’re doing something very different and unique to the space.”
Hemsworth added,
“Mark is one of the kindest people in the world and most talented, and to be able to improvise in a comedic space, and act together and it feel like you have a trusted scene partner is a blessing.”
Despite this trust, the shift to antagonists brought new emotional pressure.
Ruffalo described the unfamiliarity of this new dynamic:
“When this came along, it was obviously very unfamiliar territory for our dynamic.”
Hemsworth agreed, admitting how acting against a trusted friend heightened his self-awareness.
“I personally felt it was like acting in front of a family member, where they know all your tricks, and you feel a lot more self-conscious,”
he said.
“But that kind of lent itself to what my character was supposed to be feeling in that moment, so it really helped.”
Admiration and Respect Between Co-Stars
Ruffalo praised Hemsworth’s performance and vulnerability in the role, expressing deep admiration:

“And I was just looking at him, going, He’s so good. I love him so much, and I’m so excited to see him do this kind of part, and the vulnerability that he had.”
He also reflected on how different Hemsworth’s new character is compared to Thor.
“Chris is someone who knows what to do when the time is right to do it, and we love him for that. But this character doesn’t know what to do sometimes. At some glance, he’s like the best jewelry thief in the world, [but] when you scratch the surface a little bit more, the guy’s just a mess, you know? And that was exciting to see.”
Ruffalo was so impressed by Hemsworth’s transformation that he admitted,
“When I did see him on set, I didn’t recognize him, honestly.”
Supporting Cast and Release Details
Crime 101 also stars Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and Monica Barbaro, rounding out a strong cast for the gritty thriller. Fans can catch the film in theaters starting this Friday.
The collaboration between Hemsworth and Ruffalo on Crime 101 showcases their versatility beyond the Marvel universe and highlights the challenges and excitement that come with portraying complex, conflicted characters. Their shift to playing adversaries adds tension and depth to the film, promising a compelling cinematic experience.
