Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has officially confirmed that a sequel to last year’s blockbuster F1 film is underway. Speaking to BBC during an event in Los Angeles connected to the Academy Awards, Bruckheimer ended months of speculation about the follow-up to the motorsports drama, directed by Joseph Kosinski.
While the announcement excites fans of the original, details about the upcoming F1 sequel remain scarce. Information on the production schedule, storyline, and returning cast and crew has not yet been disclosed. Brad Pitt and Joseph Kosinski’s participation as lead actor and director is still uncertain, but Bruckheimer indicated that Pitt would have significant input on casting decisions for the new film.
The first F1 movie became the highest-grossing theatrical release for Apple Original Films, earning over $630 million worldwide. It was praised for its gripping performances, especially from Pitt, dynamic direction by Kosinski, and the energetic score composed by Hans Zimmer. Authenticity was enhanced by filming at actual Formula 1 venues during multiple race weekends.
Beyond its commercial success, F1 has achieved several Academy Award nominations, including a bid for Best Picture. Bruckheimer expressed surprise and happiness over this recognition, emphasizing that the nominations reflect the film’s entertainment quality despite the challenges faced during production, such as the Hollywood strikes. He also highlighted the excitement of collaborating with Pitt once again.
This project reunites Bruckheimer and Kosinski after their work on Top Gun: Maverick, which similarly earned a Best Picture nomination. Looking ahead, Bruckheimer confirmed plans for additional installments within other franchises, including Tom Cruise’s Top Gun series, Days of Thunder, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
