Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind the hit racing film F1, has confirmed that a sequel is in development, with discussions underway involving Lewis Hamilton, who served as a producer and creative consultant on the original movie. This announcement came during The Hollywood Reporter’s Nominees Night on February 10, signaling more Formula 1 action on screen in the near future.
Sequel in Development and Collaboration with Lewis Hamilton
Speaking at the event, Bruckheimer, known for producing blockbuster franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and Top Gun, revealed that the sequel’s story is currently being developed. He said,
“We’re working on the story. It’s really good,”
and added that they are engaging Lewis Hamilton in the creative process.
“We’re talking to Lewis Hamilton. We’re getting it going through him and pitching him the ideas and see what he thinks,”
Bruckheimer explained.
When pressed about whether lead stars from the first film, such as Brad Pitt, would return, Bruckheimer remained noncommittal, stating,
“We’ll see. I’m not going to tell you yet.”
About the Original Film and Its Success
The first F1 film stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 racing prodigy who makes a comeback after three decades away from the sport. Alongside Pitt, Damson Idris portrays Joshua Pearce, a young teammate mentored by Hayes, while Javier Bardem plays Rubén Cervantes, the team’s owner. The movie, released in June 2025, garnered significant box office success, earning $633 million worldwide and securing four Oscar nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Visual Effects.

Director Joseph Kosinski Expresses Enthusiasm for a Sequel
Joseph Kosinski, the film’s director, expressed openness to continuing the story. He told PEOPLE in October 2025,
“Based on the reception of the film, I would love to see what adventures Sonny Hayes is going on to next, and I think the audience would too.”
Kosinski added,
“So we’re actually gonna start talking about that very soon, start kind of coming up with, ‘What could that next chapter of his story be?’”
Filmed during real Formula 1 races across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the production was an emotional experience for Pitt. Kosinski recalled,
“We let him do a few more laps at the end of the last take just because I knew he loved it. I think it was emotional for him to say goodbye to this character because he really loved playing him.”
The Anticipation of What’s Next for the Franchise
With Jerry Bruckheimer spearheading the sequel and Lewis Hamilton deeply involved in shaping the new storyline, the future of the F1 film series appears promising. The original film’s combination of thrilling race sequences and character-driven drama resonated with audiences and critics alike, suggesting that the upcoming project will strive to build on that success. As talks progress, fans of the franchise and Formula 1 racing eagerly await further announcements regarding the cast and release timeline.
The original F1 film is currently available for streaming on Apple TV, keeping audiences engaged until the sequel arrives.
