Kevin Costner Teases Possible Return to Sports Movies

Kevin Costner, widely recognized for his memorable roles in sports films such as Field of Dreams and Tin Cup, is contemplating a return to the sports movie arena. During the Fanatics Super Bowl Party in San Francisco, the actor-director expressed openness to creating another sports film if the right story presents itself, highlighting his ongoing connection to this genre.

Reflections on Past Iconic Sports Films

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Costner confirmed his willingness to star in a new sports movie, saying,

“I would,”

when asked about making another. He recalled a project that was nearly realized before the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, noting,

“I had one and then the Cubs went and won the World Series. So I had one at one point. I was going to do it.”

Costner referenced his involvement with notable sports classics, including Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, For the Love of the Game, and Draft Day. He distinguished two of these films, stating,

“Field of Dreams and Bull Durham separated themselves. I never saw that as being a risk.”

He emphasized that the choice to participate hinges on his suitability for the role, cautioning,

“If you don’t fit in a sports movie, you just shouldn’t do it. Doesn’t matter how much you love the sport.”

Choosing Projects Based on Authenticity and Audience Connection

Costner described his approach to selecting sports movie projects as a careful alignment between his own sensibilities and those of the audience. He remarked,

“I knew I read something great in Bull Durham. I knew I read something great in Field of Dreams.”

His commitment to authenticity in portraying sports was clear when he added,

“You owe the sport the reality that you can bring to it.”

Comments on Super Bowl Halftime and Personal Sports Memories

At the same event, Costner also offered praise for Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show. He shared his happiness for the artist, saying,

He further commented on the music’s role in Bad Bunny’s success:

“I hope we haven’t really spoiled it for him… but you know what? When the music’s behind him, that’s what has driven him to success.”

In addition, Costner recalled organizing private basketball games during Final Four weekends for about six years. Describing the experience, he said,

“For about six years, we’d take over a gym… It would start with [Mike Krzyzewski]… and Rick Majerus. They would bring some of their players.”

He also highlighted the respect he received from these coaching legends, noting,

“To see these guys… to see them and the way those dudes treated me… was so classy.”
