Reflections on a Challenging Film Experience
A decade has passed since Deadline’s first interview with Leonardo DiCaprio about The Revenant, marking a significant milestone for the actor and the acclaimed survival story directed by Alejandro Inarritu. During their initial meeting in New York, fresh off the punishing shoot, DiCaprio was physically depleted, turning a planned quick drink into a full dinner where he ordered nearly every item on the menu. The grueling conditions of filming—the extreme cold at times freezing the lenses of cinematographer Chivo Lubezki’s cameras—made the production notoriously difficult. Crew members even asked DiCaprio to convince Inarritu to call it a day on multiple occasions due to the brutal weather.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Career and Continued Challenges
It became evident that DiCaprio would not frequently choose such physically demanding roles that put himself and others in danger. For example, during his Oscar-nominated role in One Battle After Another, he delegated dangerous stunts, such as a 40-foot fall, to a stuntman, handing over his character’s iconic bathrobe for the leap. Since then, DiCaprio has taken on challenging parts in movies like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Don’t Look Up, Killers of the Flower Moon, and One Battle After Another. However, none of these have tested him to the extent The Revenant did.
Special Events and Panel Discussion for the Anniversary
To commemorate the 10th anniversary, director Alejandro Inarritu will participate in a Q&A panel following the February 26 screening at the Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria. DiCaprio will join the discussion virtually, sharing insights and stories from the production of The Revenant. The film, scripted by Mark L. Smith, also stars Tom Hardy and was produced by the late Steve Golin alongside Inarritu, Arnon Milchan, and Mary Parent.
“It seemed clear to me then that DiCaprio wasn’t going to make a habit of making too many movies that himself and everyone in peril.” – unnamed source
