Director Ryan Coogler recently reflected on his collaboration with Chadwick Boseman and the profound lessons he gained from the late actor. Speaking about the Black Panther project, Coogler revealed how working with Boseman reshaped his perspective on filmmaking and how the actor’s death has influenced his career approach since.
The Emotional Toll of Boseman’s Passing
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler discussed the deep professional and personal impact Boseman’s passing had on him. While directing Black Panther, the pressure Coogler faced made it difficult to fully appreciate Boseman’s artistry in real time.
“Engaging with him on an artistic level, conversations that will forever just be between me and him — I was about 30 years old, stressed, completely out of my mind, sleep-deprived, convinced that the movie wasn’t going to work,”
Coogler recalled. Reflecting on that period, he admitted,
“I robbed myself of truly enjoying that privilege.”
Appreciating Boseman’s Dedication on Set
Coogler praised Boseman for his unwavering professionalism during filming. He emphasized the actor’s consistent excellence, saying,
“Even of sitting there and enjoying the countless Chadwick Boseman takes, because he didn’t have a bad take.”
Boseman’s death caused Coogler to reconsider how he valued these creative moments.
“When he passed, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, how much stuff have I not allowed myself to enjoy because I was in my own head, feeling like I was unworthy,’”
he said.
Adopting Boseman’s Lessons in Future Work
The director shared that these reflections have transformed his attitude on every project he directs going forward. He expressed a commitment to embracing positivity and presence on set, stating,
“I’m going to take the lessons from Chad for the rest of my life. I have to see the good in things, see the value in things, and not let impostor syndrome or guilt or negativity rob me of moments with my cast.”
Continuing the Journey After a Difficult Loss
Boseman passed away in 2020 after privately battling cancer, a loss that profoundly affected the Black Panther cast and crew. Coogler described how the production of Wakanda Forever continued amid grief, underscoring the lasting influence Boseman has on those who worked with him. The experience has clearly reshaped Coogler’s outlook, guiding him to cherish creative moments and approach his craft with renewed determination.
