Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role as Lucas Sinclair in the hit series Stranger Things, has firmly dismissed ongoing rumors about a secret episode following the Season 5 finale. Despite the show‘s official conclusion on New Year’s Eve 2025, some fans speculated about a hidden ninth episode scheduled for January 7, fueling widespread online theories. McLaughlin, now promoting his new film GOAT, addressed these claims and clarified the show’s official ending.
Caleb McLaughlin Responds to Fans’ Theories About Hidden Content
After Stranger Things Season 5 wrapped up with a nostalgic and emotionally resonant finale, certain fans appeared unsatisfied with the closure. This dissatisfaction sparked the so-called “Conformity Gate” theory, where some viewers believed the finale was a deception crafted by the villain Vecna, suggesting that an additional secret episode would soon be released to alter the show’s conclusion.
These fans analyzed small details, such as scenes involving the graduation event and the last Dungeons & Dragons game, hoping to uncover hidden clues pointing to more to come. However, Caleb McLaughlin refuted these theories, explaining that fans were struggling to accept the series had ended after ten years.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter during his GOAT promotion, McLaughlin said:
“At first, I thought the ‘Conformity Gate’ theory was dumb. I get that people want to live in this optimistic place of, ‘Oh, we want more Stranger Things,’ but the show is done, guys. I was like, ‘Guys, it’s over. It’s been ten years. We were full-on kids and now we’re full-on adults, and we don’t need any more of us.”
The Duffers, our wonderful, amazing creators, wanted to leave everybody with this level of optimism that the show has always given everyone. So if they left the show without that, we would have left Stranger Things without the true essence of what we’ve been representing forever.
We started off season one playing Dungeons & Dragons, and we ended just like that. And Mike’s storytelling and writing ability [that’s rooted in D&D] is how the show should have ended. I think people missed the concept of what the show is when they were like ‘Oh, there’s going to be more.’ No, that’s just Mike’s imagination. That’s who he’s always been, even in season one. It’s all just storytelling.”
McLaughlin emphasized that the finale acted as a final farewell to the Stranger Things universe, capturing the bittersweet feeling that made the series unique for many viewers.

Acceptance and Moving Forward After Stranger Things’ End
McLaughlin did not soften his stance when addressing the conspiracy behind the “Conformity Gate” theory. He pointed out that a decade has passed since the cast members started as children, and now, as adults, they have grown into different phases of life with separate careers and priorities. The notion of hidden versions of the cast appearing in secret episodes is unfounded.
The Duffer Brothers, creators of the series, intentionally crafted an ending that offered hope and resolved the storyline with warmth, maintaining the spirit that defined the show throughout its run. The story began and ended around themes of imagination, friendship, and the shared experience of playing Dungeons & Dragons.
While some fans may have hoped for a surprise twist or continuation, McLaughlin insists that the finale represented the authentic conclusion the series deserved, reflecting the vision of its creators and the growth of its characters.
Caleb McLaughlin says the idea of a secret 9th episode of ‘STRANGER THINGS’ Season 5 was dumb.
“The show is done, guys. I was like, ‘Guys, it’s over. It’s been 10 years.’ We were full-on kids and now we’re full-on adults, and we don’t need any more of us.”
