Glen Powell Teams Up with Legendary Directors in New Films

Next week, Glen Powell will appear in the black comedy How to Make a Killing, distributed by the renowned A24 studio, known for its selective marketing approach. This movie draws inspiration from the classic film Kind Hearts and Coronets, which featured Alec Guinness portraying multiple roles with a comedic flair. Powell’s involvement highlights his commitment to more nuanced projects amid his rising prominence in Hollywood. The release offers audiences a chance to see Powell beyond his familiar roles and experience the depth of his affinity for cinema craft, a notable shift from some of 2024’s less acclaimed blockbusters.

Powell’s Evolution from Popular Roles to Serious Acting Endeavors

Glen Powell gained early attention for performances like those in Top Gun: Maverick, where he was often seen as the charismatic, athletic figure. However, he has demonstrated versatility through work in more substantial films, notably portraying astronaut John Glenn in the 2016 drama Hidden Figures. Powell’s recent lead role in Richard Linklater’s film Hit Man earned him a Golden Globe nomination. In addition to acting, he co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced this project, marking a creative milestone that aligns with his longstanding respect for influential Austin filmmakers.

Collaboration with Richard Linklater and Robert Rodriguez

Powell openly credits Richard Linklater and Robert Rodriguez as formative influences and mentors during his upbringing in Austin, Texas. He expressed to The Oscars’ official site,

“Growing up in Austin, the two guys that were legends there are Richard Linklater and (From Dusk Till Dawn director) Robert Rodriguez. So, obviously, I wanted to get in the trenches with Rick.”

Glen further reflected,

“Rick is a guy who gave me one of my first jobs in Austin, Texas, and was a guy I looked up to so much when I was growing up. I started writing screenplays in my creative writing class freshman year and was studying Richard Linklater movies; now, here I am, releasing a movie I’m really proud of with Richard Linklater.”

Earlier in his career, Powell appeared briefly in Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 3D: Game Over (2003), playing the role known as ‘long-fingered boy.’

Upcoming Projects Showcasing Diverse Collaborations

In addition to the current A24 release, Glen Powell is set to star in JJ Abrams’ upcoming movie The Great Beyond, shooting in 2026. With a high-profile cast including Jenna Ortega and Samuel L. Jackson, this film will explore a young couple’s confrontation with a supernatural force. Scheduled for IMAX release this November, The Great Beyond promises visually immersive storytelling, marking Abrams’ first film since concluding his involvement with the Star Wars franchise. Alongside this, Powell is linked to a forthcoming film directed by Ron Howard about a firefighter’s life, though details including the title remain undisclosed.

Significance of Powell’s Diverse Film Collaborations

Glen Powell’s career trajectory, marked by collaborations with distinguished directors such as Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, JJ Abrams, and Ron Howard, signals a deliberate move toward deeper, more character-driven work. His willingness to engage in co-writing and producing projects reflects a desire to shape his filmography beyond acting alone. These varied partnerships indicate that Powell is positioning himself as a versatile talent capable of balancing mainstream exposure with compelling, thoughtful cinema. Given his recent Golden Globe nod and upcoming high-profile projects, his work in these collaborations may significantly influence his standing as an emerging leading figure in contemporary American film.
