Halle Berry Unbothered by Age Joke in Crime 101 Film

Halle Berry showed no discomfort over an unplanned comment about her age in the upcoming crime thriller Crime 101. The film features the Oscar-winning actress as Sharon, a high-end insurance broker who becomes enmeshed in a tense chase involving a detective and a jewellery thief. Berry’s character faces professional challenges tied to her appearance and age, reflecting real-world biases she has experienced.

Plot and Character Context Highlight Age-Related Challenges

In the movie, Sharon is frequently used by her male superiors as bait to attract wealthy clients, emphasizing her appearance rather than her professional skills. As her character ages, she becomes less valued within her firm, which underscores the industry’s often unfair treatment of aging women. This narrative choice clearly resonated with Berry, who sees parallels to her personal journey in Hollywood.

Director and Co-star’s Attempt at Provoking a Reaction

During a conversation with The Times, Berry shared how one of her co-actors injected an unscripted joke targeting her character’s age. Bart Layton, the film’s director, encouraged the actor to provoke Berry intentionally. Berry recounted,

(Layton) told the actor to p**s me off. They thought they were gonna really shock me by calling me 53, because that should make me feel bad about myself,

expressing that the attempt to unsettle her missed the mark. She added,

Afterwards the director asked me if he had gone too far. I was like, ‘He actually made me younger than I am.’ It didn’t matter to me at all.

Berry Discusses the Stigma Surrounding Aging for Women

As she nears 60, Berry explained that her attraction to this role was deeply personal. She appreciates the opportunity to depict a woman confronting the age discrimination that is typically ignored for men. Berry pointed out,

What initially spoke to me (about the role) is I’m at this phase of my life. It’s a privilege to age but it’s been so stigmatised, especially for women. If they talked about men’s ages too, fair game. But they don’t. It stacks the cards against us,

emphasizing the gender imbalance in public perceptions of age.

She also highlighted how male actors’ ages rarely affect their reputations, unlike for women. Berry said,

I don’t know how old these male actors are because their age doesn’t precede their name. With us, it always does. Soon it will be ’60-year-old Halle Berry.’
