At the recent Attitude Magazine launch event for its annual list of LGBTQ+ trailblazers, Attitude 101, actor Ian McKellen’s signature painting was auctioned to benefit the Peter Tatchell Foundation. Auction Highlights and Actor’s Involvement
Sir Ian McKellen appeared as the guest of honour at the event, hosted to recognise prominent figures in the LGBTQ+ community. A painting of McKellen, created by Spanish artist Julia de Gabriel and signed by the actor, was put up for auction. As bidding commenced, McKellen took to the stage with enthusiasm, urging attendees to support the cause.
He remarked,
“Never mind the painting, lovely as it is, who wouldn’t want to have me in their bedroom?”
before emphasizing the foundation’s crucial work. He added,
“Peter Tatchell’s foundation is one of the most important institutions in this country, if not the world. I’m sure you’d agree. The least we can do is support it.”
Buyer’s Motivation and Praise for Tatchell’s Activism
The winning bid was placed by Suki Sandhu, founder and chief executive of the executive search firm Audeliss. Discussing his reasons for purchasing the artwork, Sandhu expressed deep admiration for McKellen’s influence on the community and for Peter Tatchell’s activism.
He said,
“I adore Ian McKellen. He is one of the true icons of our community. They say we stand on the shoulders of giants.”
He continued,
“I can’t be who I am now today if it wasn’t for the work that he did decades ago and Peter Tatchell also the work that he does for our community, I mean, the bravery, the courage it takes for what he does. How can I not support that?”
