This shift is most evident in the upcoming Netflix thriller The Whisper Man, set to premiere in 2026, where De Niro portrays a former police detective involved in a gripping kidnapping case.
De Niro Stars as a Retired Detective in Netflix’s The Whisper Man
The Whisper Man has been in development since the Russo brothers secured the rights to Alex North’s novel in 2018. Netflix officially backed the project in 2022, with principal filming conducted in early 2025. De Niro was announced as part of the cast only months before production, suggesting a later addition.
In the series, De Niro plays Pete Willis, a retired detective and estranged father who becomes pivotal when his grandson, the son of Adam Scott’s character Tom Kennedy, is abducted. Willis’s history with the original Whisper Man murder investigations in the town of Featherbank equips him with crucial expertise, though his fractured relationship with his son complicates matters.
The Transition to Roles as Veteran Law Enforcers
While De Niro has built his six-decade career on portraying criminals and mobsters, his recent screen choices signal a departure from that archetype. His role as Pete Willis follows on from similar performances as law officers in the Netflix projects Zero Day and Tin Soldier. In Zero Day, De Niro played George Mullen, a former U.S. president investigating a cyberterrorism attack, and in Tin Soldier, he was Emmanuel Ashburn, a strategist aiming to stop a dangerous cult leader.
Together, these roles emphasize a new direction where De Niro embodies characters dedicated to upholding the law rather than breaking it. Although his gangster portrayals remain iconic, this new pattern suggests that such parts will become less frequent moving forward.
Upcoming Television Projects Extend De Niro’s Focus on Law Enforcement
Following his initial foray into television dramas with Zero Day, De Niro continues to expand his presence on the small screen. He is scheduled to headline multiple new series set for 2027, further solidifying his shift toward roles as legal figures.
Among these projects, De Niro will star in Bobby Meritorious on Paramount+ as a former police officer turned prosecutor, showcasing another dimension of law enforcement. Additionally, he will take the lead in the crime series Mr. Natural produced by Entertainment One, where he also serves as executive producer. Both shows remain in developing stages but are expected to begin filming next year.
