Rupert Grint, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, has revealed that his earnings from the franchise give him the freedom to select his acting projects carefully. At 37, the actor returns with Nightborn, his first movie in three years, which will debut at the Berlin Film Festival on February 14, 2024.
Grint discussed his approach to acting in a Variety interview published on February 13, stating that he prioritizes balancing work with family life and personal downtime, thanks to the financial security brought by the Harry Potter films.
Grint’s Career Choices Influenced by Long-Term Financial Success
Since the Harry Potter movies wrapped up in 2011, Rupert Grint has been able to pick roles that truly interest him, rather than taking every opportunity. He shared that he intends to do approximately one project per year going forward while focusing on quality over quantity.
“I love working, but I also just love being at home, hanging out and being a dad. I’m not ridiculously ambitious,”
Grint said, referencing his life with his daughters Wednesday, 5, and Goldie, who will turn 1 in April, and his partner Georga Groome.
The Associated Press estimated in November 2024 that Grint earned about 24 million British pounds (around $32.74 million) from his decade-long role as Ron Weasley, which has allowed him significant artistic freedom.
“I’m very aware of that privilege,”
he told Variety.
It was hard work, but those movies have allowed us to pick and choose, which is just such a gift. Obviously it doesn’t mean you’re always going to choose the right thing. But I do feel very lucky for that.”

Reflections on the Harry Potter Experience Shape Grint’s Perspective
Grint described his time working on the Harry Potter films, which released from 2001 to 2011, as an “absolute constant” in his life. This extensive experience has influenced his appreciation for downtime and helped shape his decision to work less frequently on new projects.
Since 2020, Grint has taken on relatively few roles, including four seasons of the television series Servant. Most recently, he appeared in a supporting role in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 film Knock at the Cabin before moving on to star in Nightborn.
Plot and Cast Details of Nightborn
Nightborn, directed by Jaap Buitendijk and backed by Warner Bros., is a Finnish horror movie that premieres at the Berlin Film Festival. The story follows Saga, played by Seidi Haarla, and her British husband Jon as they move to an isolated house deep within a Finnish forest.
“With dreams of starting a perfect family, Saga (Seidi Haarla) and her British husband Jon move to the isolated house deep in the Finnish forest where Saga spent much of her childhood,”
the synopsis reads.
“But as soon as their baby is born, despite the reassurances of everyone around her, Saga knows something is terribly wrong. As their marriage starts to crack and Jon struggles to support his wife, only Saga suspects the disturbing truth about their newborn child.”
The cast also includes Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey, and John Thomson alongside Grint and Haarla.
The Impact of Financial Independence on Grint’s Career
Rupert Grint’s financial stability from the Harry Potter franchise has clearly impacted how he manages his acting career, allowing him to prioritize personal life and select roles that resonate with him. His experience highlights how long-term franchise success can offer actors the luxury to be selective in their future projects.
As Nightborn makes its debut this year, Grint’s fans and critics alike will be watching to see how his selective project choices translate into fresh and diverse performances.
