At the 17th Annual African American Film Critics Association Awards held in Los Angeles on February 8, 2026, Ryan Coogler received widespread recognition for his work on the 2025 film Sinners. Coogler won the prestigious awards for Best Director and Best Writer, marking a significant moment in his career. The director’s emotional acceptance reflected the deep meaning of these honors during a night celebrating Black cinematic achievements.
Emotional Acceptance Speech and Tribute to Community
During his acceptance speech for Best Director, Coogler became visibly emotional, shedding tears twice as he spoke about the experience. In a heartfelt moment, he acknowledged fellow filmmaker Ava DuVernay, who presented the award, expressing the comfort and safety her support provides him within the industry. Coogler humorously commented,
“Every man has come up here and cried,”
before adding,
“I’m the first one to cry twice. Ava, you made me feel safe in this industry. Every day, knowing that you’re out there makes me feel safe. I think the love of a Black woman is the most powerful human force on Earth.”

Coogler emphasized that filmmaking is a collaborative effort, highlighting the vital contributions of his crew and cast. He stressed that the work of a director depends heavily on the community around them.
“The director is nothing without that crew, without that cast,”
he said, continuing,
“It’s truly a community-based job. It is a skill, it is a craft, it is a calling, but you need people to do it.”
