Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto, widely recognized for his role in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club, stars as the villainous Skeletor in the upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot. Set to release on June 5 in theaters, the film features Leto’s voice and performance behind a digitally rendered skull. This reboot brings a fresh take on the iconic character, which is expected to revitalize the franchise for a new generation.
The Visual and Vocal Transformation for Skeletor
Unlike previous adaptations, Leto’s portrayal involves extensive use of visual effects. He appears entirely covered in a blue muscle suit with his face replaced by computer-generated imagery, rendering his physical presence nearly invisible. More importantly, Leto’s voice for Skeletor diverges from the character’s classic high-pitched tone famously provided by Alan Oppenheimer in the 1980s animated series.
Instead, Leto’s vocal approach channels the 1987 live-action film’s Skeletor, originally performed by Frank Langella, who delivered a Shakespearean-inspired interpretation. According to reports from the latest issue of Empire:
And while [Jared Leto’s] vocalisation avoids rehashing the memorable nasal whine of the original cartoon Skeletor (voiced by Alan Oppenheimer),
it doesn’t sound like his own, having instead a dry, Shakespearean timbre.
Plot Overview and Supporting Cast of Masters of the Universe
Directed by Travis Knight and scripted by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham, Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, played by Nicholas Galitzine, as he returns to Eternia after 15 years apart. Upon arrival, he finds the land devastated under Skeletor’s control. To protect his family and world, Adam unites with allies Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), while embracing his destiny as He-Man, the universe’s mightiest hero.
The ensemble cast also includes Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, Kristen Wiig, alongside Jared Leto and Idris Elba.
Significance of Leto’s Role and Film’s Anticipation
Following a range of box-office disappointments such as Morbius and TRON: Ares, Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor marks a notable moment. His adoption of a Shakespearean tone for the character’s voice adds depth to the villain and honors the legacy of previous portrayals. As fans await the reboot’s release this summer, expectations are high for the film to rejuvenate interest in the Masters of the Universe series, blending nostalgic elements with modern storytelling and technology.
