Chris Hemsworth Teases Bold Thor Revival After Avengers Doomsday

Chris Hemsworth, last seen as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installment Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), is set to return with a bold new direction for his character. Following the conclusion of the Infinity Stones saga in Avengers: Endgame, many MCU veterans, including Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Mark Ruffalo, were not expected to reprise their roles. However, the Russo Brothers are spearheading Avengers: Doomsday, an upcoming blockbuster event set for release in December that reunites multiple MCU stars, both veterans and newcomers. Amid this revival, Hemsworth confirmed that his work in the Thor franchise will continue with new solo projects.

Exploring New Directions for Thor’s Character

During an appearance on the Smartless Podcast, Hemsworth revealed his discussions with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the future of Thor. He shared,

“I was talking to (Marvel boss) Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character. And whatever we do next, we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be (different)”

This highlights Marvel’s intention to take Thor in unexpected, fresh directions while maintaining engagement with fans.

Hemsworth Enjoys the Variety Brought by Different Directors

Hemsworth also reflected on the creative freedom he has experienced playing alternate versions of Thor under various directors, explaining how this diversity has kept the role exciting. He said,

“It’s been so much fun. And what I’ve really enjoyed it, unlike a lot of what the other characters that the (actors) were given, they have had to be pretty consistent, whereas working with Taika Waititi on his films versus Kenneth Branagh with those films and then with the Russos, all (the films) had quite a different sort of tonal opinion. But (the Russos) also let me try different things. It’s the same with my tattoos, I’d be getting really bored (with) the same thing and having a real need to kind of throw (the performance) in different directions.”

This variety in tone across the MCU films has contributed to the richness and unpredictability of his portrayal.

Thor’s Role in Avengers: Doomsday and Family Connections

In Avengers: Doomsday, Hemsworth will reprise his role as the God of Thunder. The recently released teaser shows Thor kneeling and praying to his late father, Odin, begging for the safety of his daughter, Love. Notably, his on-screen daughter will be played by Hemsworth’s real-life daughter, India. Love was introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder, further expanding Thor’s family storyline within the MCU.
