Sir Ian McKellen, a distinguished British stage actor, expressed that he does not fully understand the film Hamnet, which stars Paul Mescal and is directed by Chloe Zhao. Despite the movie gaining notable Oscar attention, McKellen conveyed that its portrayal of William Shakespeare’s inspirations did not resonate with him. The film explores the tragic loss of Shakespeare’s young son and its possible influence on his famous work, a theme McKellen found difficult to connect with.
McKellen’s Perspective on Shakespeare’s Creative Origins in Hamnet
In an interview with The Times, McKellen explained why he remains unconvinced by Hamnet’s narrative approach. He stated,
“I’m not very interested in trying to work out where Shakespeare’s imagination came from, but it certainly didn’t just come from family life.”
The film is an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, which suggests the death of Shakespeare’s 11-year-old son Hamnet inspired the tragedy Hamlet. McKellen, having a deep background in Shakespearean theatre, questioned this link and the film’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s life.
Comparing Hamnet’s Oscar Potential to Shakespeare in Love
Reflecting on Hamnet’s growing awards buzz, McKellen predicted it might mirror the trajectory of Shakespeare in Love, a film that also offered an unconventional take on Shakespeare’s creative process.
“As Hamnet races towards the finishing line, as far as Oscars are concerned, it’s likely to repeat the success of Shakespeare in Love, which had odd views as to how plays get put on,”
he said. Nevertheless, McKellen acknowledged the widespread fascination with Shakespeare’s life, noting,
“But then Shakespeare’s perhaps the most famous person who ever lived, so of course there is some interest in what he looked like, what his relationship with his family was. And we can’t know.”
Questions About Certain Elements of the Film’s Story
McKellen also voiced skepticism about some details in Hamnet, calling parts of the narrative improbable, including the suggestion that Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, had never seen a play before. His long experience with Shakespearean roles, including performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, adds weight to his critical view of the film’s interpretation of historical details.
Ian McKellen’s Esteemed Career and Upcoming Projects
Known for his versatile portrayals, Ian McKellen has brought to life characters ranging from King Lear on Broadway to Magneto in the X-Men film series and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. His reflection on Hamnet provides insight into his thoughtful engagement with Shakespearean storytelling and modern adaptations.
