Djimon Hounsou Launches Fanaticus Media with ‘Calabash’ Debut

Veteran actor and two-time Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou has taken a step further into film production by officially launching Fanaticus Media Group (FMG). This announcement coincides with the Berlin screening of FMG’s debut feature, Calabash, which was shown this week as part of the AfroBerlin programme.

Alongside the screening in Berlin, Hounsou participated as a featured speaker at the AfroBerlin conference, highlighting his commitment to supporting African and diaspora storytelling.

‘Calabash’: A Comedy Exploring Cultural Clashes Within Families

Directed by Omar S. Kamara, Calabash is a culture-clash comedy that investigates the hidden tensions beneath a seemingly flawless wedding celebration. The narrative follows two families from distinctly different traditions who come together to celebrate a union, only for their varied expectations and suppressed conflicts to create chaotic and anxiety-ridden situations.

“When two families with distinct traditions, expectations, and unspoken agendas come together for a celebration meant to unite them, anxiety-fueled scenarios quickly spiral.”

The Berlin screening follows a special presentation at the Sundance Film Festival, signaling early international interest and momentum for the film.

The Vision Behind Fanaticus Media Group

Fanaticus Media Group expands upon Hounsou’s previous venture, Fanaticus Entertainment, and will be led by his longtime producing partner Gemma Rocha. Rocha will manage the company’s strategic growth and creative development in close partnership with Hounsou.

Rather than operating as a traditional production company, FMG aims to function as both a production house and an ecosystem builder. Its long-term goals include fostering international co-productions, developing diaspora-focused distribution strategies, and creating sustainable infrastructure throughout Africa and its global communities.

This approach reflects a broader mission to open lasting pathways for African and diaspora filmmakers to share their stories on a worldwide stage.

Djimon Hounsou’s Expanding Role as a Producer

While Hounsou is widely recognized for his powerful on-screen performances, he has steadily accrued producing credits, including films like Elephant White (2011), The Road to Freedom Park (2013), and his directing debut with the documentary In Search of Voodoo: Roots to Heaven (2018). Fanaticus Media Group represents a new phase, centralizing and growing his behind-the-scenes work.

“We’re incredibly honored for Djimon to be speaking at AfroBerlin and to bring a sneak-peek screening of Calabash to the festival — particularly following the film’s special screening at Sundance. AfroBerlin’s commitment to showcasing African stories aligns perfectly with the spirit of the film and the global conversations it is designed to spark, and we’re proud that this moment also marks the official introduction of Fanaticus Media Group’s next chapter.”

The Broader Significance of Fanaticus Media’s Launch

Hounsou’s decision to found Fanaticus Media Group comes at a time when discussions around ownership, infrastructure, and the global representation of African and diaspora narratives are gaining momentum. This move reflects his determination to not merely participate within existing systems but to actively build and shape new ones that uplift diverse voices.

By combining production capabilities with strategic outreach and infrastructure development, Fanaticus Media is positioned to have a meaningful impact on how African stories are told and shared internationally.
