Gerard Butler’s Plane Sequel Canceled: Shocking Last-Minute Exit

The highly anticipated Gerard Butler Plane sequel, titled Ship, has been officially canceled, as revealed by Mike Colter. The unexpected decision came shortly before production was set to begin, leaving fans uncertain about the future of the franchise.

Mike Colter Confirms the Sequel’s Sudden Cancellation

Mike Colter, who was expected to return as Louis Gaspare, provided a clear update on the status of the Plane sequel during an interview with The Direct at Fan Expo Vancouver. Despite the project being close to starting production, Butler, who also served as a producer, withdrew at the last moment.

It just, last-minute, Gerard decided he didn’t want to go forward with it, and there wasn’t a lot of discussion about it,

Colter explained.

He just… two weeks out, he pulled out, and we were sort of left trying to figure out what to do. And eventually, that dissolved.

Colter expressed enthusiasm for the script, which was intended to continue his character’s story from the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of Plane. The sequel’s plot revolved around uncovering what happened to Louis Gaspare and how he managed to escape the island.

The script. Basically picking up where we left off, what happened to that character, and how’d he get off the island. That was where we were gonna go with it. So, I was excited about it,

he said. At this time, there appears to be no plan to restart or revive the project.

The Premise and Success of the Original Film

Plane, released in January 2023, follows a pilot forced to make an emergency landing on a Philippine island amid a violent storm and war zone. The film earned critical praise and attracted audiences worldwide, grossing over $74 million against a $25 million budget.

The original movie’s success sparked the development of Ship, which was expected to continue Louis Gaspare’s journey. Earlier indications suggested that the sequel would explore Louis escaping the Philippines by boarding a cargo ship bound for South Africa, where he would uncover a human trafficking operation. Details about Gerard Butler’s involvement in this sequel, including whether he would have made a cameo, remain unclear following his exit.

Implications of the Cancellation for the Franchise’s Future

Gerard Butler’s sudden withdrawal and the resulting cancellation of Ship cast significant doubt on the continuation of the Plane story. The disappointment among fans and industry watchers centers on the unresolved cliffhanger and the potential expansion of the character’s arc. Without Butler’s participation, it seems unlikely the sequel will move forward soon, leaving the franchise in an uncertain state.
