Daniel Radcliffe Calls Rupert Grint Wizard of Oz Pitch a “Bad Idea”

Daniel Radcliffe recently shared insights into an unusual project proposal involving his former Harry Potter co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. During a Hot Ones interview, Radcliffe revealed that while the Harry Potter films were still in production, there was a pitch to cast the three actors in a remake of The Wizard of Oz. Radcliffe described this idea as one of the worst he had heard, highlighting the project’s odd concept and his youthful skepticism toward it.

Early Proposal for Wizard of Oz Featuring Harry Potter Trio

Daniel Radcliffe recalled that someone approached the Harry Potter cast with the idea of remaking the classic Wizard of Oz, starring him, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Emma was intended to play Dorothy, Radcliffe was to portray the Cowardly Lion with an unusual twist, and Grint’s role was unclear in Radcliffe’s recollection. Radcliffe explained,

“One of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard, during Potter, somebody came to us and I think asked, like they wanted to cast all three of us, me, Emma and Rupert, in a remake of Wizard of Oz.”

Continuing with the unusual details, Radcliffe said,

“Emma was Dorothy. I can’t remember what Rupert was, and I just remember that I was gonna be the lion but also he knew karate.”

He added,

“I was like a karate-kicking cowardly lion. And I remember I was like 14 or 15 and I was like, ‘I don’t know a lot about the world, but this is a bad idea and it should not be made.’”

The Legacy of The Wizard of Oz and Attempts at New Versions

The 1939 adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, directed primarily by Victor Fleming, remains the most iconic version of L. Frank Baum’s novel. This adaptation featured Judy Garland as Dorothy, Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, Jack Haley as the Tin Man, and several other notable actors, including Frank Morgan, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton.

Despite the appeal of seeing the Harry Potter cast in a new take, the Wizard of Oz remake with Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint never materialized. Instead, Hollywood opted for other projects like Sam Raimi’s 2013 prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful, which starred James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Rachel Weisz.

In late 2024, the highly anticipated adaptation of Wicked premiered, serving as a prequel centered on the Wicked Witch’s story from the original Oz narrative. It starred Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good. This two-part film retelling grossed $1.2 billion worldwide, earning ten Oscar nominations and winning four awards for its initial installment.

Insights on the Harry Potter Reboot and Cast Reunions

Though Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint have not yet collaborated on a new project together, the trio reunited in 2022 for the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special. A year later, HBO Max announced a television reboot of the Harry Potter series.

Radcliffe shared in an interview with People that he has maintained some contact with his co-stars about the reboot. He commented,

“Yeah, a little bit. But not much beyond how surreal it this to watch people starting off on that journey, all those years later.”

The upcoming HBO series, slated for early 2027, will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Radcliffe expressed a shared emotional connection with Watson and Grint regarding the new cast and the revival of their roles, stating,

“It’s one of those where I think we all just know how the others feel, because we’re also feeling it,”

before adding,

“You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them. That’s the impulse that I think that we, mainly, all have.”

Significance of the Rupert Grint Wizard of Oz Pitch and Future Prospects

The revelation of the Wizard of Oz pitch involving Radcliffe and his Harry Potter co-stars sheds light on the various creative directions considered for the iconic trio beyond the wizarding world. Radcliffe’s straightforward dismissal of the idea reflects thoughtful judgment during his early career, emphasizing how not every proposed project aligns with the talents or public perception of well-known actors. Meanwhile, the enduring interest in reviving the Harry Potter saga through the HBO reboot highlights the lasting impact of the original films and their cultural significance.

As audiences eagerly await the new series featuring fresh faces stepping into these beloved roles, Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint’s continued support and occasional reunion maintain the deep connection fans have with the original cast. Their legacy not only defines a generation but also ensures that any future endeavors linked to these characters are approached with respect and care.
