Anna Sawai, known for her role in Shōgun, will portray Yoko Ono in the upcoming Sam Mendes Beatles films, titled The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event. The project aims to offer new perspectives on the band’s history, and Sawai hopes that audiences will gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Ono, who married John Lennon in 1969 and has frequently been blamed for the band’s breakup. This film series is scheduled to debut in theaters in April 2028.
In-Depth Research and Preparation for the Role
Sawai shared with Variety that portraying Yoko Ono is a dream come true, and she has dedicated herself to thorough research. Her preparation includes extensive reading and viewing to capture Ono’s true personality beyond common perceptions.
It was my dream to tell her story and I didn’t think it would come this quick,
Sawai told the magazine.
There’s a version of her I feel people still don’t understand. And in this film, I think we’re going to be able to tell that side of the story.
Highlighting the importance of Ono’s artistic work, Sawai noted how her creativity offers insight into her character.
So many books, so many videos, so many articles,
she explained.
She has so much artwork that also shows her personality.
Cast’s Musical Performance Reflects Beatles’ Authenticity
The cast members portraying The Beatles—Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan—have impressed Sawai with their musical abilities. According to her, they have progressed to the point where they no longer need sheet music and can perform the songs naturally.
They’re not even looking at the sheet music anymore,
Sawai said.
They can just play it off and sing it, and it really sounds like the Beatles to me. It feels surreal.
Project Scope and Anticipated Release
The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event will consist of four films, each offering the story from the viewpoint of a different band member. This approach allows for a multi-faceted exploration of the band’s story, promising fans an immersive cinematic experience when it arrives in theaters in April 2028.
