At a recent career retrospective event held by American Cinematheque and Cinespia in Los Angeles on February 13, Timothée Chalamet experienced an unexpected interaction with director Christopher Nolan. Despite his status as a three-time Oscar nominee, Nolan treated Chalamet like the teenager he once directed in Interstellar, leading to a surprising moment between the two. This Christopher Nolan Timothée Chalamet interaction revealed a playful side rarely seen in the renowned filmmaker.
Revisiting Early Roles Through Shared Memories
The retrospective showcased screenings of Interstellar alongside Call Me by Your Name, tracing Chalamet’s growth as an actor. During the gathering, Chalamet recounted Nolan’s amusing greeting that caught him off guard.
“and he throws me in a headlock and starts giving me a noogie. I’m like, ‘Holy sh—, Chris Nolan’s hitting me with a noogie right now,’”
Chalamet recalled. This moment unexpectedly brought back feelings from his youth, making him briefly feel like a teenager again after more than a decade.
Reflecting on the encounter, Chalamet said,
“The whole experience with Nolan, I felt totally like 17 again. I went home, it was shocking …That was a crazy car ride home for me. I was like, ‘Holy sh—, I feel like, you know, the 13 years that elapsed haven’t elapsed.’”
Age and Roles: A Lighthearted Exchange
During the event, Chalamet reminded Nolan of his age, stating,
“Chris, I’m a 30 year old man.”
Nolan responded simply, “Not to me, you’re not.” This comment underscored the director’s lasting perception of Chalamet as the young actor he first encountered professionally.
Despite the playful teasing, Chalamet reflected seriously on his role in Interstellar, which remains a standout in his career. Though his part as Tom, the son of Matthew McConaughey’s character, was relatively small, the film holds a special place in his heart.
“Though my role is not enormous — I think I was number 12 on the call sheet — this film came to me at a time in life, in my career, where things were certainly not set yet,”
he explained.
“And it’s remained my favorite project I’ve ever been in.”
He continued,
“It’s the film I’ve seen the most of, of all the films ever made in human history.”
