Daniel Radcliffe, known for his iconic role in Harry Potter, shared a peculiar and unsettling pitch involving the Harry Potter trio just as his career took on diverse roles. The actor revealed this unusual idea during an appearance on Hot Ones, describing it as one of the worst pitches he has ever encountered.
Radcliffe Recalls Unusual Wizard of Oz Reboot Proposal
While promoting his Broadway show Every Brilliant Thing and the upcoming comedy The Rise and Fall of Reggie Dinkins, Radcliffe was asked about strange project offers. He immediately recalled a strange proposal made during the height of Harry Potter’s popularity. The pitch involved remaking The Wizard of Oz with all three main Harry Potter actors: Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and himself.
Radcliffe explained,
“One of the worst ideas that I’ve ever heard: During Potter, somebody came to us and, I think, asked — like they wanted to cast all three of us — me, Emma [Watson] and Rupert [Grint] — in a remake of Wizard of Oz, where Emma was Dorothy, I can’t remember what Rupert was and I just remember I was going to be the lion, but also, he knew karate. I was like a karate-kicking Cowardly Lion,”
detailing the odd combination of classic characters with unexpected traits.
He recalled his youthful reaction to the suggestion, saying,
“I was like 14 or 15, and I was like, ‘I don’t know a lot about the world, but this is a bad idea. This should not be made.’”
Current Projects and Passing the Torch
Following this, Radcliffe remains active in acting, recently appearing in the December release of Merrily We Roll Along, a live-filmed adaptation of the acclaimed Tony Award-winning musical revival starring alongside Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez. The project highlights Radcliffe’s ongoing versatility beyond his famous wizard persona.
As the Harry Potter franchise moves forward with a new reboot series featuring Dominic McLaughlin in the lead, Radcliffe has written a heartfelt letter to the young actor, encouraging him as he steps into this legacy role. Radcliffe shared his sentiment with,
“I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did — I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time.”
He also expressed a desire to stay out of the reboot’s limelight, explaining
“I didn’t want to be a specter in the life of these children.”
Legacy and Impact on the Franchise
Radcliffe’s reflection on this odd Wizard of Oz pitch provides insight into the pressures and curiosities surrounding blockbuster franchises and their stars. His willingness to address these unusual ideas openly, alongside his support for the new generation of actors, suggests a thoughtful perspective on his lasting role within the Harry Potter universe. Fans can anticipate seeing Radcliffe continue to choose distinct and challenging roles, while the reboot series takes the story into fresh directions with a new cast.
