Timothée Chalamet Opens Up on Acting Snub by Former Co-Star

Timothée Chalamet recently recounted a tense experience on set, revealing that a former co-star questioned his abilities and dismissed his acting training during a previous ensemble project. The actor shared this incident in a conversation with Matthew McConaughey, shedding light on an unsettling moment in his early career.

During the interview with Variety, Chalamet detailed how an anonymous colleague challenged his credentials by asking about his formal training, implying that without attendance at a conservatory, he lacked true acting skills. This occurred while they all worked together as part of a larger cast.

“No names, but the guy was a punk. He asked me what conservatory I had gone to, and I said I didn’t go to an acting conservatory. And he said, ‘Well, you haven’t trained as an actor then.’ And we were all part of an ensemble.”

Despite this dismissive comment, Chalamet confided in McConaughey that he has grown adept at ignoring unsolicited advice, especially when it seems more about the giver’s own ego than genuine guidance.

“I always said, ‘Beware of the people in life that get more of the advice they give you than you get at the advice.’ They’re thrilled by the act of giving you advice. All of a sudden you can’t listen to what they’re saying anymore because they’re flexing on you so hard.”

Chalamet clarified that the person who made these remarks was not McConaughey, with whom he has maintained a warm relationship.

“You never did that to me, though, which I’m grateful for.”

Reflecting on Support from Matthew McConaughey During Early Career

The Variety discussion also brought the two actors back together, years after appearing in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film Interstellar. At the time of filming, Chalamet was only 17 and still deciding whether to pursue acting full-time or continue with his studies.

In the 2013 movie, Chalamet played Tom, one of the children of Cooper, the character portrayed by McConaughey. The younger actor spoke about the positive influence McConaughey had on him during the shoot.

“I remember you had a yoga mat, and you’d be working out and sleeping on set. It was all very strange to me. But it was super inspiring. I just can’t thank you enough for being warm to me at that time, when you had no reason to be warm to me. It just changed my life, man.”

McConaughey responded appreciatively to this acknowledgment.

“You were pretty easy to be warm to.”

— Matthew McConaughey

Despite leading major films in recent years, Chalamet revealed that Interstellar remains his favorite project so far, both because of McConaughey’s performance and the experience on set.

“Man, that remains my favorite project I’ve ever been in. I think it’s your most fantastic role. I know you were coming off ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ but that movie, to me, was the origin point in seeing how you carried yourself on set, how seriously you and Christopher Nolan took the work.”

— Timothée Chalamet

He added that the film gave him confidence as a young actor emerging from high school, helping him take his craft seriously during a period of uncertainty.

“It gave me a license. Coming out of high school, it’s hard to take yourself super seriously. You can feel like you’re wasting time or stuck-up or something.”
