Rose Byrne recently addressed the reason her partner Bobby Cannavale was absent during her first Golden Globe win last month. While Byrne accepted the award for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Cannavale was not in the audience because he was attending a reptile expo in New Jersey to purchase a bearded dragon. This event coincided with the Golden Globes, leading to some misunderstandings about his absence.
Clarifying Misconceptions About the Reptile Expo Visit
Byrne wanted to make it clear that Cannavale’s visit to the reptile expo was not a spontaneous hobby or casual interest. In an interview with The New York Times published on February 22, she reflected on her announcement during the awards show:
“Never in my life will I announce something like that on a major awards show again,”
Rose Byrne said.
Byrne explained that many assumed Cannavale’s trip was purely for his own enjoyment, but the reality was quite different. He was there to acquire a pet that their children had long wanted.
“Everyone was thinking it’s for Bobby. It’s not! It’s for our children,”
she emphasized, adding, “The children.”
The Challenges of Balancing Parenting and Awards Season
Before the Globes, Byrne mentioned on The Tonight Show how unfortunate it was that the timing of the Golden Globes clashed with the reptile expo. She acknowledged that missing the chance to get the lizard for their kids would have been a major parenting failure.
Byrne stated,

“So we’re doing it, and I’m on board for the dragon. It’s gonna be great.”
This revealed the couple’s shared excitement about welcoming the new pet into their family despite the scheduling conflict.
Rose Byrne’s Emotional Golden Globe Acceptance Speech
During her acceptance speech, Byrne appeared surprised and unprepared, resulting in a brief but heartfelt address. She expressed gratitude toward writer-director Mary Bronstein and humorously described the film’s production:
“Of course, I didn’t prepare anything,”
Byrne admitted, sharing,
“We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50.”
Her short speech led to Byrne feeling she had left out key acknowledgments, which she later regretted.
“[I was] totally out of my depth and inarticulate,”
Byrne told The New York Times.
“I was texting so many people later, saying, ‘I’m sorry, I forgot to say thank you to this person and that person.’”
Support from Conan O’Brien After the Ceremony
Byrne found consolation in advice from her If I Had Legs I’d Kick You co-star Conan O’Brien, a seasoned awards show host who will soon return to the Academy Awards stage. O’Brien assured her that the brevity of her speech was actually an advantage.
“Conan was like, ‘Shut up, it was great. No one wants to hear someone bang on for hours,’”
Byrne recalled.
“He’s become an unofficial life coach. He’s lovely.”
The New Addition to Byrne and Cannavale’s Family
Following the Golden Globe ceremony, Byrne shared with Extra that the decision to prioritize the reptile expo was worthwhile. The bearded dragon had become a beloved member of their household, contributing positively to family life.
“We’ve got the guy. He’s really cute, and he’s in the house, and it’s going well,”
she confirmed in January.
Relationship and Family Life of Byrne and Cannavale
The couple has been together since 2012 and shares two children. Although they have never officially married, Byrne and Cannavale refer to each other as husband and wife. They have also worked together professionally in projects like the movie Spy and the TV series Platonic.
Significance of Balancing Career and Parenthood
The story underscores the ongoing challenge faced by actors like Byrne and Cannavale in balancing professional commitments with family responsibilities. Cannavale’s choice to attend the reptile expo highlights their priority in providing for their children even amid major career milestones. As Byrne’s career continues to rise, both will likely continue navigating this complex dynamic.
