Australianactor Chris Hemsworth, known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, says that relocating from the bustling city of Los Angeles to the Australian Outback was the greatest decision he has made. The 42-year-old revealed that the move, which took place when his children were born, allowed him and his family to escape the pressures of Hollywood life and enjoy the spacious rural lifestyle he grew up with.
Hemsworth described life in Los Angeles as overwhelming, saying,
“It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in LA and not enjoying it, you know? Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else,”
during a podcast episode of SmartLess. He recalled returning home to the distractions of
“paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of, you know, living in that space,”
which helped cement the family’s decision to move back to Australia.
A Family Life Away from Hollywood’s Spotlight
Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky, who have been together since 2010 and share three children—a daughter and twin boys—now live on a large farm in Australia. The new environment provides their children freedom to play and explore in a way that was impossible in LA.
Hemsworth described the farm as a personal refuge, stating,
“You know, when you come back from work, you wanna go on a holiday? Like coming home for me is – it feels like a holiday. We have big farm and horses and motorbikes and surf,”
emphasizing how the outdoor lifestyle brings him a sense of peace and joy.
Roots in the Australian Countryside Shape Hemsworth’s Childhood
Chris Hemsworth and his brothers, Liam and Luke, grew up about 20 minutes outside Melbourne in a rural area surrounded by bushland and rainforest. Reflecting on his childhood, Hemsworth said,

“We lived about 20 minutes from, like, the main sort of suburban areas in Melbourne up in the hills,”
adding that
“the nearest neighbor was a kilometer or two away.”
He fondly remembered the outdoor adventures he and his brothers enjoyed, which fostered his early passion for acting. Hemsworth said,
“It was just all bush land and rainforest sort of set up around us,”
and that he and his brothers would spend their time
“playing different characters,”
which sparked his interest in acting.
From Repairing Appliances to International Stardom
Before his rise to fame, Hemsworth held a humble first job repairing breast milk pumps for Fisher & Paykel, an Australian appliance manufacturer. He described the work:
“And they would come back to us, and I’d have to repair them when, like the little belt, the motor belt would break. You’d also have to clean all the dried milk that was on them,”
recalling that
“I’d have a toothbrush and spray and wipe and – that was my first job.”
Hemsworth’s acting career began in the early 2000s with small roles in Australian television before his breakthrough came through the soap opera Home and Away. His international recognition grew after starring in the 2011 film Thor, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which launched subsequent roles in The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Endgame, and most recently, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Professional Achievements Highlighted by Hollywood Honors
In 2024, Hemsworth was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During his acceptance speech, he paid a heartfelt tribute to his wife Elsa Pataky for her unwavering support, saying,
“I want to say thank you to my beautiful wife, who has been here for my entire career basically by my side, endlessly encouraging and supportive,”
and continued,
“And it doesn’t get lost on me that she put aside her own dreams in order to support mine and, again, [I am] forever in your debt.”
He expressed his love and gratitude, stating,
“The fact [is] that nothing that I do, any of these moments, these special occasions and events, none of it is special without you by my side. I love you.”
Significance of Hemsworth’s Return and Future Outlook
Chris Hemsworth’s decision to leave the fast-paced environment of Los Angeles for the tranquility of the Australian Outback reflects a larger trend among celebrities seeking a balanced family life away from constant public scrutiny. By choosing to prioritize his family’s well-being and reconnecting with his roots, Hemsworth has demonstrated the impact of lifestyle choices on personal happiness despite career demands.
His move also underscores how success in Hollywood does not always equate to contentment, especially when weighed against the pressures of fame, paparazzi, and lack of privacy. As Hemsworth continues to thrive in his acting career, his grounded rural lifestyle may serve as a model for others craving a similar balance between work and home life.
