James McAvoy, widely recognized for his recent role in Speak No Evil, has embarked on his James McAvoy directorial debut with a new film titled California Schemin’. The project, inspired by the Scottish faux-American rap duo Silibil N’ Brains, marks the actor’s move from acting to directing, a transition he has been developing for several years.
Four Years of Commitment and Growing Responsibilities
The Scottish performer revealed that the film has demanded intense commitment, having been in production since August 2024. Reflecting on his experience, McAvoy said,
“It’s nuts, actually. I’ve been working on the film for almost four years now and (been) in production on it since August 2024. And I’m still working on it (up until release).”
Alongside directing, he continues to act, which has expanded his workload considerably. He admitted to Empire Magazine that becoming a director has doubled his unpaid responsibilities.
“What I’ve found in becoming a director, even though I’m not directing anything right now, is that my unpaid workload has doubled.”
He further elaborated,
“Now I’m reading scripts as an actor and reading scripts as a director; I’m developing things for other people.”
Balancing Creativity with Anticipation for Completion
Although McAvoy is passionate about the creative process involved in directing, he confessed a desire for a break from the intense demands.
“It’s great. It’s very creative. But I’m also like, ‘When’s the bit where I get to sit in my pants at 3pm and watch a film again?”
he said, revealing the toll of juggling multiple roles.
California Schemin’ is anticipated to premiere in April, representing a major milestone in James McAvoy’s transition behind the camera. This debut could shape his future in filmmaking, showcasing his versatility beyond acting and highlighting his dedication to storytelling from multiple perspectives.
