Damon Lindelof is back at the helm as showrunner with a chilling new project for HBO. The network has ordered The Chain, an eight-episode limited series based on Adrian McKinty’s 2019 thriller novel, marking Lindelof’s first lead series role since wrapping Watchmen in 2019. The show promises a tense narrative that explores the terrifying consequences of a sinister kidnapping conspiracy, drawing on the dark themes that have long defined Lindelof’s work.
Following his overall deal with HBO that began last year, Lindelof’s collaboration with the network expands beyond his executive producer roles on Mrs. Davis and the upcoming DC series Lanterns. The Chain represents his full creative return, as he takes charge of crafting a new show from the ground up.
Expanding the Mythology of a Brutal Thriller
Produced by Media Res, the studio behind The Morning Show, The Chain is positioned to deepen the disturbing narrative originally created by McKinty. HBO has highlighted that Lindelof will be
“expanding the mythology of McKinty’s thriller,”
a task that suggests a layered and unsettling exploration of the book’s already brutal premise.
The story revolves around Rachel Klein, a mother whose life is shattered when she answers a phone call from another woman who informs her that Rachel’s daughter is kidnapped, bound, and gagged inside a car. The caller outlines horrifying instructions: Rachel must pay a ransom and then kidnap another child herself. Failure to comply results in her daughter’s death. The abductor is not a typical villain; she is also a mother forced into this cruel cycle because her own child is held captive. This relentless system transforms victims into perpetrators, trapping Rachel within an impossible moral spiral with no escape.

From Novel to Screen: A Journey Marked by Resilience
Adrian McKinty’s path to publishing The Chain was as dramatic as the story itself. After authoring several novels, McKinty stepped away from writing in 2017 and worked as a bartender and an Uber driver to support his family. This unexpected turn paused his literary career until fellow author Don Winslow discovered McKinty’s situation and introduced his books to agent Shane Salerno. Encouraged by Salerno to write another book, McKinty produced The Chain.
The novel quickly attracted Hollywood interest. Universal Pictures acquired the film rights in 2020 with Edgar Wright set to direct and Jane Goldman tapped to write the screenplay. However, this feature version did not move forward. In 2024, the project was reimagined for television when Media Res optioned the novel, with the story’s serialized format proving well-suited for a limited series.
Creative Team Behind the Series
The pilot episode is a collaboration between Damon Lindelof, Carly Wray, and Breannah Gibson, with Lindelof and Wray co-writing the script. In addition to Lindelof, executive producers include Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer for Media Res. Shane Salerno also produces, and Adrian McKinty serves as co-executive producer, ensuring the author maintains creative involvement in the adaptation.
Lindelof’s Excitement and HBO’s Commitment
Lindelof expressed strong enthusiasm for The Chain, reflecting his connection to the source material’s originality and tone. He stated,
“I’ve always wanted to try to adapt a great thriller, and this one has all the dark, weird, exhilarating touches that fire up my imagination. I feel so fortunate to reteam with Francesca, Casey and Michael, who first brought me to HBO 15 years ago, and I can’t wait to make The Chain a memorable link in their outstanding legacy.”
HBO’s executive vice president of programming and head of HBO Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, highlighted the network’s ongoing faith in Lindelof’s vision:
“We are honored by our continued partnership with Damon Lindelof, one of the most singular and distinctive creators of our time. The Chain promises to continue his legacy of dropping us into the pit of the human brain and delivering in ways not only emotionally daring but, ultimately, transformative.”
Potential Impact and Audience Expectations
If The Chain fully embraces the moral complexity and psychological tension at the heart of its story, it stands to become a compelling thriller that challenges viewers with morally ambiguous situations and emotional intensity. Damon Lindelof’s involvement raises expectations for a series that not only entertains but also probes the dark recesses of human nature and desperation. As audiences anticipate this return to a full showrunner role, The Chain is set to offer a gripping exploration of fear, survival, and the harrowing choices forced upon its characters.
