During an episode of the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast, Berry shared that at the time she had never done nudity on screen, and the sex scene in Monster’s Ball was surrounded by a sense of caution and scrutiny. She recalled,
“People around me said, because at that time I hadn’t done nudity, and the sex scene was like a big, like it had a big red light on it.”
The actress described her feelings about the scene as a pivotal moment, saying,
“I felt like this was either gonna be one of the best things I ever did or it would end my career.”
Berry emphasized her determination by stating,
“If this ends my career, then I’m ending my own career on my own beliefs.”
She viewed the film as a small, independent project with no major financial backing, which gave her the freedom to take the risk freely. Berry expressed the lasting confidence the choice gave her, sharing,
“When you really believe that – and I do – I can still sit here 30 years later at 60 this year, not afraid to do anything really ’cause I still feel that way.”
At age 59, she reiterated,
“I have nothing to lose. Nothing.”
and added,
“And that is a really empowering feeling that has allowed me to try many different things over my career.”

Despite the historic Oscar win for Monster’s Ball, Berry explained in an interview with The Cut that it did not immediately transform her career path as she had hoped. She acknowledged,
“That Oscar didn’t necessarily change the course of my career.”

“While I was wildly proud of it, I was still Black that next morning.”
Berry also discussed the ongoing challenges she faced with Hollywood casting decisions. Addressing barriers due to race, she recounted,
“Directors were still saying, ‘If we put a Black woman in this role, what does this mean for the whole story? Do I have to cast a Black man? Then it’s a Black movie. Black movies don’t sell overseas.”
