Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song are using the 1990 movie Home Alone as a tool to teach their children important stranger danger tips. The couple recently showed the Christmas classic to their kids, Dakota, four, and Carson, three, hoping to improve their understanding of personal safety in everyday situations.
By watching the film, the parents aim to introduce their children to safety concepts in an engaging and memorable way while reinforcing practical lessons about strangers and awareness.
Introducing Stranger Awareness Through Play and Discussion
Brenda Song emphasized how her children enjoy the film’s antics, including the clever traps set by the main character, but still lack a full grasp of the dangers involved. She said,
“They love all the hijinks and the traps and stuff. They have no real concept [of the danger]. My oldest gets it more than my younger son.”
She explained her approach to the lessons, teaching Dakota and Carson that a stranger is anyone whose name they do not know, regardless of appearances or supposed relationships.
“I said, ‘They’re a stranger if you don’t know their name,’”
Brenda explained, adding,
“I was like, ‘It doesn’t matter if they’re someone’s parents. If you don’t know their name, or you’ve never seen them before at our house, they are a stranger.’”
She also takes every opportunity to enhance their safety skills during outings by discussing routes and exits. Brenda shared,
“Everywhere we go, I’m like, ‘How do we get home?’ Every building we go in, like, ‘How did we get here? How do we get out?’”
She further said,
“I was teaching them exit signs.”
The Storyline of Home Alone as a Safety Lesson
Home Alone follows the story of eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, portrayed by Macaulay Culkin, who is accidentally left alone at home by his parents, Kate McCallister and Peter McCallister. Kevin defends his house against two burglars, Harry Lyme and Marv Murchins, using a series of creative and often painful traps.

This narrative provides a backdrop for the couple’s safety teachings, linking fictional scenarios to real-life advice about awareness and caution.
Macaulay Culkin Reflects on Teaching Safety While Managing Their Children’s Impressions
Macaulay, who got engaged to Brenda Song in January 2022, openly supports Brenda’s focus on safety but acknowledges she is very intense about it. Brenda shared,
“My partner thinks I’m absolutely crazy about it.”
Even though the children watch the film often, they have not yet fully realized that their dad played Kevin McCallister. At a special 35th anniversary screening of the original movie held at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre, Macaulay revealed,
“They have no idea that I’m Kevin.”
He elaborated,
“They’re only three and four years old, [I want] to keep up that illusion as long as possible.”
Watching Home Alone Together Strengthens Family Bonds
Despite the mystery his children maintain about his role, Macaulay enjoys sharing the movie experience with them. He commented,
“Yeah, I do really love watching that movie with my boys.”
Brenda and Macaulay’s commitment to teaching stranger danger and safety through a beloved film highlights the challenges parents face in blending entertainment with important life lessons, which can leave children both engaged and cautious.
