Lindsay Lohan Opens Up About Struggling with Teen Fame

Lindsay Lohan is reflecting candidly on the difficulties she faced with fame as a teenager, following her rise to prominence. The actress, who first experienced massive public attention after the success of Mean Girls in 2004 at age 17, describes her early career as a complicated and overwhelming period. Her journey highlights the intense pressures that accompanied her rapid ascent in Hollywood and the difficult choices she made to cope with it.

Life Under Intense Public Scrutiny

During a conversation with Vogue Arabia, Lindsay described the spotlight as, “all so overwhelming and consuming.” She expressed regret about not moving back to New York, where her parents lived, during those tumultuous years, saying,

“I should have listened to my mom and dad and moved back to New York. But I was young and wanted to be in LA. And I didn’t know.”

This decision kept her embedded in the intense environment of Los Angeles, where the pressures on her were relentless.

Seeking Refuge Far From Hollywood

In 2014, to escape the relentless glare of fame in Los Angeles, Lindsay relocated to Dubai. Reflecting on that period, she acknowledged the complexities of growing up famous:

“So yeah, while a lot of it was fun, it was hard when I was young. It was a double-edged sword. Now I look back and wonder, ‘Why didn’t anyone just go and take me out of there, protect me more?’ You don’t know how to do that yourself when you’re a teenager.”

Her move across the globe represented a decisive break from Hollywood’s demands and allowed her to find a new sense of self away from the public eye.

In her time away, Lindsay experienced important personal growth, meeting and marrying her husband, Bader Shammas. She shared,

“I wasn’t having fun in the business anymore. I wasn’t finding roles I loved. It’s not a life I wanted to live, you know? It’s not a real life. It pushed me so far away that I moved to the other side of the world. And I’m so glad I followed my gut.”

Returning to Film with New Creative Control

After her hiatus, Lindsay reemerged in acting with romantic comedies such as Falling for Christmas, Irish Wish, and Our Little Secret. Notably, she has taken on more involvement behind the scenes, stepping into a leadership role in her projects. She served as an executive producer on Freakier Friday, which premiered in 2025. Lindsay revealed how she has grown more comfortable shaping her career and characters directly:

“When I was younger, I wasn’t so comfortable saying how I felt about a character and being involved with the process of it. And I love that part now. I always felt like I had too many people around me and that I was being guided in a different direction. And now it feels good to steer my own ship.”

Future Projects and Continued Growth

Lindsay Lohan is set to appear in the Hulu series Count My Lies, based on Sophie Stava’s novel, signaling her continued return to acting. Her evolving approach to her career shows a deeper sense of agency and a commitment to working on projects that resonate with her personally, marking a new chapter beyond the turmoil of her early years under intense public pressure.
