Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot Ordered to Pilot at Hulu

Hulu, a streaming service owned by Disney, has ordered a pilot episode for a reboot of The X-Files, with Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther, leading the project. The Ryan Coogler X-Files reboot aims to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic science fiction series focused on mysterious FBI investigations.

Details on Casting and Storyline of the Reboot

According to Variety, actress Danielle Deadwyler has been cast in one of the two leading roles, while the second lead remains uncast. The story centers on

“two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”

Creative Team and Production Involvement

Ryan Coogler will write, direct, and executive produce the pilot through his Proximity Media production company, alongside co-founders Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler. Simone Harris from Proximity will co-executive produce, and Jennifer Yale will take on the roles of showrunner and executive producer. The original series creator, Chris Carter, is also involved as an executive producer. The pilot is a collaboration between Disney’s Onyx Collective and 20th Television.

Background on The X-Files Franchise

The original The X-Files series aired from 1993 to 2002, starring David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, two FBI agents investigating paranormal cases under the so-called X-Files division. The show had a revival with two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018, with Duchovny, Anderson, and Carter returning. The franchise also includes two feature films: one in 1998 and another in 2008 titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Neither Duchovny nor Anderson will appear in the upcoming Hulu pilot.

Implications and Audience Expectations

This reboot marks a significant effort to revitalize a classic series for a new generation, with Ryan Coogler’s involvement suggesting a commitment to distinctive storytelling and production quality. As fans await further casting news and production updates, the project’s success may hinge on balancing respect for the original’s legacy with fresh narrative approaches to unexplained phenomena investigations within the FBI.
