Hollywood actor Ethan Hawke has spoken about the demanding process behind his Oscar-nominated performance in the film Blue Moon, revealing that memorizing its extensive dialogue “broke my brain,” according to People. The film, which earned Hawke his fifth Academy Award nomination, required him to master a script with an extraordinary volume of lines, unlike anything he had tackled before.
Understating the Challenge of the Dialogue-Heavy Script
At 55, Hawke portrays the real-life lyricist Lorenz Hart in the Richard Linklater-directed biopic, penned by Robert Kaplow. Set almost entirely in a New York City bar on a single night in 1943 during the Broadway premiere of Oklahoma!, the film unfolds in real time. Hawke explained that the format demanded that he internalize the entire script to perform it seamlessly, much like a play but without the benefit of weeks of rehearsal.
I had more lines on my first day of filming Blue Moon than I’d probably had in 10 years combined,
Hawke said, describing the overwhelming quantity of dialogue. He added with a smile,
it broke my brain,
emphasizing how intense the memorization process was. The actor also noted,
This [role] was going to use everything I learned about craft.
I needed to know the whole movie like a play — without the six weeks of rehearsal for a play that you would have. So it was kind of being fired from a cannon,
Hawke said, highlighting the demanding nature of his preparation and performance without the usual rehearsal period.
Building on a Longstanding Creative Partnership with Richard Linklater
Blue Moon marks the ninth collaboration between Hawke and director Richard Linklater, a partnership that began in the mid-1990s with Before Sunrise. Hawke reflected on their enduring creative relationship, expressing mutual motivation and respect for the meaningful work they have produced over decades.
We’ve been pushing each other and driving each other for 30 years. And we’ve made films that are really meaningful to us. And when other people like them, it feels tremendous,
he said, underscoring the deep connection and artistic synergy between the two.
Reflecting on a Storied Oscar Journey and Upcoming Ceremony
Hawke’s path to his fifth Academy Award nomination began with his supporting role in Training Day (2001), with nominations spanning acting and screenwriting categories. When the nominations for this year were announced, he asked his wife to wake him only if his name was called, revealing a quiet hopefulness and anticipation.
On reaching five nominations, Hawke expressed gratitude while also recognizing that many talented actors remain unacknowledged for their work. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15, hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast live on ABC and Hulu, marking a significant moment in Hawke’s continuing career.
