Gaten Matarazzo, the 23-year-old actor known for his role as Dustin Henderson in Stranger Things, has shared insights into how his rare genetic condition has shaped his life. Born in New London, Connecticut, Matarazzo lives with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), a condition that affects bone development and is marked by underdeveloped or missing collarbones. His openness about his experience brings attention to the challenges and unique opportunities brought by the disorder.

How CCD Influences His Career and Appearance

In a recent interview with Health Insight, Matarazzo spoke candidly about managing CCD and its impact. He said,

“My experience with cleidocranial dysplasia has been pretty good, honestly. I have a very mild case of it and it hasn’t really caused me to be bullied or anything.”

The condition affects several aspects of his physical appearance, including his height and teeth, which in turn influence the roles he obtains.

“Pretty much every part I’ve booked is because of the condition. In some way, it affects me—whether it be my height, my teeth, or making me look younger,”

he added.

Matarazzo credits CCD with opening doors in his acting path, stating,

“It has benefited me in many ways because it’s basically started my acting career.”

He also expressed that the condition has allowed him to speak about it openly, saying,

“It’s given me an opportunity to talk about it and not feel ashamed of it.”
