John Goodman Reveals Why Voice Acting Drains Him More Than You Think

John Goodman, known for his roles with the Coen brothers and memorable performances like Sully in Monsters Inc, also spends considerable time voicing animated characters, including Papa Smurf in 2025’s Smurfs and Santa Claus in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie. While some might assume that voice acting is an effortless task compared to on-screen work, Goodman explains that the process requires intense physical and emotional exertion, making it more exhausting than many realize.

Challenges Faced During The Emperor’s New Groove

Goodman’s experience voicing Pacha in Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove particularly highlighted the demanding nature of voice acting. Despite having prior voice roles, this high-profile project pushed him beyond his expectations. The film’s production faced significant hurdles, including a title change from Kingdom of the Sun and an extended development period exceeding five years. Goodman found sustaining the necessary energy to bring Pacha to life physically draining.

It wore me out. I don’t want to sound whiny, it’s not like laying [a] brick or anything. But just sustaining energy. I put my whole body into it when I do animation, and it gets a little tiring after a while,

Goodman told Vulture.

He also reflected on factors that may have added to the challenge during the recording sessions.

Plus, I think I was still smoking, so that couldn’t have helped. They tape you, so they know what kind of faces I’m pulling. That’s pretty smart, because they can draw your dialogue around it,

he added.

Lasting Impact of Voice Roles and Continuous Dedication

Despite the physical toll, Goodman’s voice work has been warmly received. His comedic talents enriched his performance as Pacha, contributing to The Emperor’s New Groove’s $169.7 million box office success and its enduring fan popularity. Though the direct-to-DVD sequel, Kronk’s New Groove, where he reprised the role, failed to impress critics, Goodman’s enthusiasm for voice acting remained unchanged.

He continued to accept various voice roles, embracing the demanding nature of the craft as part of his calling. Rather than an easy alternative to live-action work, these roles challenge him in unique ways and demonstrate his dedication to breathing life into animated characters across different franchises.
