Cillian Murphy has revealed details about the storyline for the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, titled The Immortal Man. The film continues the narrative of the popular series, centering on Tommy Shelby, the dangerous Birmingham gang leader played by Murphy, whose character embodies a darker, conflicted state.
Murphy, 49, who gained international recognition through his role in the Netflix series Peaky Blinders, explained that the movie picks up with Tommy in a liminal state.
The Character’s Emotional Struggle
In a conversation with Deadline, Murphy described Tommy Shelby as someone
“not really living, he’s not really dead. He’s ignoring the world, he’s ignoring his family which is a brilliant starting point so can you reel him back in.”
This perspective highlights the character’s detachment and internal battle early in the film.
Murphy also shared,
“Ultimately, he takes on a war he once claimed wasn’t his and fights for all the people that were killed,”
illustrating Tommy’s shift toward confronting past conflicts and seeking justice.
Production and Cast Details
The movie, directed by Tom Harper, will reunite Murphy with fellow stars Paul Anderson and Sophie Rundle. Additional cast members include Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, and Stephen Graham, adding depth to the ensemble.
Set for release on March 6, The Immortal Man aims to honor the fans of the series. Murphy emphasized his motivation by saying the film is
“to be a gift to them for that investment.”
Significance and Anticipation
This film marks a notable continuation of the Peaky Blinders saga, promising a darker and more intense exploration of Tommy Shelby’s character. As the story picks up from where the series left off, fans can expect a gripping drama that delves into themes of war, loss, and redemption. The involvement of acclaimed actors and a respected director suggests the feature will maintain the high standards set by the television series, positioning The Immortal Man as a much-anticipated release in 2024.
