Dave Bautista plant-based diet choices have caught many by surprise as the actor and former wrestler reveals his long-standing avoidance of dairy and red meat. Over the past decade, Bautista has leaned toward a predominantly plant-based lifestyle, reflecting changing attitudes about diet and masculinity seen across various high-profile athletes and entertainers.
Dave Bautista’s Dietary Journey Away from Animal Products
Dave Bautista has not consumed dairy for over 20 years, a change he initially made due to worsening asthma symptoms. While he still includes fish and eggs in his meals, he has eliminated red meat and pork since 2010. His evolving food habits are influenced by his training alongside wrestlers who maintain pescatarian or vegetarian diets. In his current acting career, Bautista favors vegan options, with a vegan grilled cheese sandwich being a common snack on set.
Despite this shift, Bautista admits he maintains cravings for certain animal-based dishes. In an interview with Jason Momoa for Complex, Bautista shared his occasional desire for a New York-style pizza with a thick, doughy crust and extra cheese. As he told Men’s Health, he also misses chicken adobo, a traditional Filipino dish, although he no longer eats it himself and still prepares it for others.

To accommodate his taste for Filipino cuisine, Bautista has been seen frequenting Señor Sisig, a restaurant offering vegan versions of classic street foods, allowing him to enjoy familiar flavors without animal products.
Masculinity and Meat Consumption Under Scrutiny
Research by the Australian National University involving nearly 5,000 participants in 2023 found that men who identify more strongly with traditional masculinity are less likely to reduce meat intake. This association is reinforced by the anti-feminist “manosphere,” where animal products are often linked with male identity.
However, Dave Bautista and other prominent figures challenge this narrative by successfully following plant-based or mostly plant-based diets without compromising strength or stature.
Other Influential Figures Advocating Plant-Forward Lifestyles
Bautista’s dietary choices align with a growing number of highly muscular men who reduce or eliminate meat consumption. Among them is Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Mr. Olympia and Governor of California, who has publicly supported plant-based eating. Schwarzenegger featured in the 2019 documentary The Game Changers, which aimed to dismantle the myth that animal products are essential for athletic performance.
In the documentary, Schwarzenegger commented on the meat industry’s marketing tactics:
“I’ve lived in that world. Steak is for men. They show these commercials—burgers, George Foreman with the grill, and [an] epic sandwich,”
and added,
“This is great, great marketing for the meat industry, selling the idea that real men eat meat. But you’ve got to understand, it’s marketing. It’s not based on reality.”
‘The Game Changers’
Another voice in this movement is Patrik Baboumian, a world-record-holding strongman who credits plant-based protein for his strength. After setting a record for the yoke walk in 2013, Baboumian advised against trusting nutritional experts pushing animal products, stating:
“Don’t listen to those self-proclaimed nutrition gurus and the supplement industry trying to tell you that you need meat, eggs, and dairy to get enough protein,”
and further urged,
“There are plenty of plant-based protein sources, and your body is going to thank you for [not] feeding it with dead food. Go vegan and feel the power!”
Plant-Based Eating Trends Among Athletes and Celebrities
The increasing adoption of plant-based diets by athletes and public figures underscores a cultural shift questioning traditional ideas of masculinity and nutrition. Bautista’s journey mirrors this trend, where strength and athleticism no longer imply adherence to meat-heavy diets.
By sharing his experiences, Bautista contributes to broader discussions on health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare. His openness about craving certain dishes but choosing plant-based alternatives may encourage others to reconsider their own eating habits without feeling deprived.
As more research continues to explore the links between diet, gender identity, and health outcomes, athletes like Bautista and Schwarzenegger exemplify how reconsidering food choices can challenge stereotypes and promote diverse approaches to nutrition and fitness.
