Why the Actor Awards Name Change Matters, Says Sean Astin

Sean Astin, President of SAG-AFTRA, recently addressed the reasons behind renaming the Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards. He pointed out that many recipients were unaware that the statuette they received is officially called the Actor, and he believes the name change helps clarify the award’s purpose both domestically and internationally.

Sean Astin Explains the Importance of the Name Change

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Astin stated that despite the award’s 30-year history, many winners do not recognize the official name of the trophy. He noted,

“But if they go back to the moment right before their name was announced, the presenters say, ‘The Actor goes to…’ and they’ve said that for 30 years. So you’re receiving the Actor award,”

Sean Astin, President of SAG-AFTRA.

Astin emphasized that the renaming was designed to improve understanding among global viewers. He remarked that merging the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) further motivated the adjustment. He explained,

“And then we had a merged union. SAG and AFTRA merged, and it was weird to me that you had the SAG Awards, even though I loved the SAG Awards. It was like, are we a merged union or not? So, ‘The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA’ completes the thought in my mind. It’s the right thing to do.”

Background and Context for the Renaming Decision

The name change had been under consideration for an extended period, but the expansion of the ceremony’s international reach, especially through Netflix’s platform, made it an opportune moment to finalize the rebranding. The updated designation aims to make the award’s meaning more transparent to worldwide audiences and to reflect the show’s evolution.

Preserving the Awards’ Legacy Amid Change

Organizers have assured fans and participants that despite the new title, the core essence of the event remains unchanged, celebrating actors honoring their peers. The official statement highlighted,

“The legacy and prestige [remain] exactly the same. We’re excited to evolve the name to further support who we are and the future growth of the show,”

organizer’s statement.

The Actor Awards name change thus represents both a nod to tradition and a step forward in showcasing the unified union’s identity, while also increasing clarity for a growing international audience. As Sean Astin pointed out, it signifies a more inclusive and representative future for the ceremony and its participants.
