Christina Applegate has shared candid details about how she dumped Brad Pitt for Sebastian Bach, the lead singer of Skid Row, during the peak of her Married … With Children fame. In her memoir, she exposes the challenging realities beneath her cheerful Hollywood image while recalling the tumultuous events in Los Angeles decades ago.
How a Teenage Crush Led to Leaving Brad Pitt Behind
At just 17, Applegate was about to become a household name as Kelly Bundy on the hit sitcom Married … With Children. Despite almost passing on the role due to her dislike of the character, her career took off. Following the show‘s success, she was invited to present at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, where she brought along Brad Pitt, then a 26-year-old actor still finding his footing in Hollywood.
However, that night she was captivated by Sebastian Bach, the young Skid Row frontman known for his long hair and rocker persona. Applegate writes,
“I had spent all night staring at Bach, who was then a long-haired hunk fronting the band Skid Row,”
revealing her teenage infatuation with the singer. She further adds,
“I hate to put it like this, but Brad back then was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams.”
The evening took a difficult turn when, after dismissing Pitt’s presence, she discovered Bach was already in a long-term relationship and had a one-year-old child. Matters worsened when Brad was left to drive her mother home and reportedly almost got into a fight with gang members at a gas station on the way, which left him angry at Applegate. She notes,

“And it gets worse: Brad was left to sullenly drive my mom … home. Apparently, at a gas station on the way, Brad almost got into a fight with a bunch of gang members, and, not surprisingly, was subsequently very mad at me.”
Long-Standing Tensions Between Applegate and Pitt
The fallout from that night lingered for years, with Pitt avoiding contact with Applegate for a significant time. She recalls that later, two of Brad Pitt’s well-known girlfriends separately inquired if she was the woman who had abandoned him at the MTV event. According to Applegate,
“Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid, and though he deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row.”
Her tone carries a hint of humor about the situation now, saying,
“Of course, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, and Sebastian Bach … well, he still has long hair, I guess.”
Balancing Fame and Personal Struggles Behind the Scenes
Applegate delves deep into the pressures she faced from a young age, starting acting at five to support her family financially, and dealing with persistent body-image issues through her teen years. Her mother, Nancy Priddy, even suggested she consider liposuction when Christina was still an adolescent, an early indication of her difficult relationship with her appearance.
These insecurities intensified during her time portraying Kelly Bundy, a character known for her revealing, rock-inspired wardrobe. Applegate reveals she would exhaust herself with rigorous workouts and skip meals just to fit into the tight Lycra dresses the character wore. She confesses,
“My ability to catch the eye of a then famous rock star and then ditch someone like Brad Pitt at an after-party … still couldn’t convince me I was an attractive person.”
Despite being seen by millions as a symbol of beauty, she felt otherwise.
“For millions of Americans watching ‘Married…with Children,’ I was an exemplar of female beauty, but to me, I was ‘too plain,’”
she says, illustrating the disconnect between public perception and her internal reality. Her quest for perfection was relentless, often bordering on self-harm as she chased an unreachable ideal through nonstop physical exertion.
Yet, Applegate does not blame the show’s creators or writers for these struggles. Instead, she explains,
“Sure, it was always part of the show that I would be an object for me to leer at, but I was the one who wanted to wear those Kelly Bundy dresses to represent something in the zeitgeist.”
Reimagining Kelly Bundy Through a Rocker’s Lens
Originally intended as a tough biker chick character, Applegate transformed Kelly Bundy after watching the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years. The film featured a beauty contest for strippers dressed in Lycra with big crimped hair, a look she adapted for Kelly, turning her into what Applegate affectionately describes as “a full rock slut.” Still, she portrayed the character with a nuanced innocence, balancing Kelly’s outward appearance with a virginal undertone.
Reflecting on how others viewed Kelly, she states,
“She was a product of the time, of MTV music videos, with women who wore corsets that were way too tight and did weird stuff for guys with frizzy hair,”
and firmly defends her portrayal:
“I have been told that I just played a whore. Not true.”
Early Relationships and Lessons Learned
At 17, when her career was blossoming, Applegate briefly dated Anthony Kiedis, the frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their date at a farmers market included Applegate’s mother joining for a sandwich, during which Kiedis revealed his habit of never wearing deodorant, warning her,
“A horse will know me before they will know you.”
After their split, Kiedis oddly requested help with laundry, something Applegate complied with despite feeling like a “stupid f–king fan.” Her diaries chronicle a pattern of troubled romances, admitting she often chose partners with serious flaws she believed she could fix, describing them bluntly as “a–holes” and “f–kups.”
Overcoming Abuse and Finding Strength
In her memoir, Applegate reveals a long-term relationship marred by physical and emotional abuse. The man controlled her daily life, including what she wore and ate. Her mother urged her to leave, pleading,
“get the f–k away from him.”
Ed O’Neill, her co-star playing her father on the show, despised the boyfriend so intensely that Applegate feared he might physically confront him.
She endured an abortion after becoming pregnant in 1991 from this abusive relationship. The situation reached a breaking point after her partner threw a cigarette lighter at her and forced alcohol down her throat, prompting her to expel him from her Laurel Canyon home.
Health Battles and Family Life
Applegate was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2021, a development she reflects on by pondering whether the physical abuses and punishing demands on her body over the years contributed to her illness. Prior to this, she had faced breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy in 2008 while working on Samantha Who? Though she sometimes feels hindered in caring for her daughter Sadie due to her MS symptoms, she searches for meaning in her experiences.
She is married to Dutch musician Martyn Lenoble of Porno for Pyros, with whom she shares Sadie, now 15. Before that, she was wed to actor Johnathon Schaech, a marriage she ended in 2005 knowing he wasn’t her ideal match. The death of photographer Lee Grivas, another former partner, deeply affected her as she was beginning a new relationship with Lenoble.
Applegate’s Reflection on Perfection and Healing
Throughout her memoir, Christina Applegate confronts her lifelong battle with perfectionism, admitting it was “the driving force” behind many choices that ultimately caused pain. She describes the process of acceptance and the gradual emergence of self-understanding as she revisits decades of her life.
She states,
“I want to talk to that little girl who always thought she had to be perfect. Maybe that’s what this book is.”
This frank account reveals the complexities behind the actress’s public persona and highlights her resilience through personal turmoil, health crises, and the challenge of reconciling past mistakes with present grace.
