Cillian Murphy on Peaky Blinders Film Taking on Nazis

Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film titled “The Immortal Man.” Set during World War II, the movie explores a tense storyline where British gangsters form alliances with Nazis to destabilize the UK’s economy. During an interview with The Telegraph, Murphy addressed the choice of Nazis as the main antagonists amid a troubling rise of Nazi sympathizers like political commentator Nick Fuentes on social media.

Murphy Reflects on Addressing Complex Themes with Entertainment

Murphy expressed discomfort with the current political climate, calling the rise of openly Nazi-aligned individuals “profoundly upsetting.” However, he emphasized that the film approaches the subject with a lighter touch, distancing itself from heavy or preachy narratives.

“The last thing I want to be involved in is preachy or dogmatic work because films should never tell you how to feel. They should just ask questions,”

Murphy said. He positioned “The Immortal Man” as an action-packed film with heartfelt moments that can also provoke deeper thought for viewers who look closely.

Drawing Comparisons to Oppenheimer’s Layered Storytelling

Reflecting on how films can tackle serious topics in multiple ways, Murphy referenced his role in Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb drama “Oppenheimer,” for which he received the Best Actor Oscar. He said,

“If you want to talk about where we are in the world and look at how close we are to nuclear fucking Armageddon, you can think about ‘Oppenheimer’ in that way, but if you just want to look at a great film with big explosions then that’s cool as well.”

Introducing New and Returning Characters in the Film

“Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” introduces Barry Keoghan as Duke Shelby, the illegitimate son of Tommy Shelby who has now taken a leadership role within the gang. Returning cast members include Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg and Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, both loyal allies to the Shelby family. The movie also features new additions Rebecca Ferguson and Jay Lycurgo, expanding the ensemble.

Release Details and Anticipation

The film is set to debut on Netflix on March 20, promising fans a continuation of the iconic series with fresh characters and wartime intrigue. Given the rising global tensions and the film’s engagement with historical antagonists, it may resonate strongly with audiences in the current climate, reflecting contemporary concerns through its period drama lens.
