Daniel Radcliffe expressed excitement about the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, which introduces the wizarding world to a fresh audience, including his young son. Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 2, Radcliffe reflected on passing the magical legacy to Dominic McLaughlin, the actor portraying Harry Potter in the new adaptation.
Passing the Torch to Dominic McLaughlin
Radcliffe shared a lighthearted take on his son growing up with a new version of Harry Potter, saying,
“I’m actually delighted that when my kid grows and is into Harry Potter, he can watch a version that is not me,”
Radcliffe joked.
“I feel like watching it with your dad would be less cool. It would take you out of it… And that means that at some point there will be somebody else to answer all the Harry Potter questions and I can pass that on to them too.”
His remarks highlight the natural progression as iconic roles get reimagined through different actors over time.
Iconic Roles Reimagined Across Generations
The idea of multiple actors taking on a beloved character is common in entertainment. Radcliffe cited Spider-Man as an example, noting how Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland each brought their own interpretation to the role. He told Colbert,
“There will always be many, many iterations,”
and added,
“So I’m very happy to see it passed onto somebody else, and best of luck to all of them.”
Radcliffe’s Journey from Child Star to Father
Since his debut as Harry in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Radcliffe has successfully transitioned into a versatile actor with roles on stage and screen, including his current Broadway work in Every Brilliant Thing. Off-screen, Radcliffe’s personal life has evolved as well. He met actress Erin Darke on the set of 2013’s Kill Your Darlings, and the couple welcomed their son in April 2023.

Enjoying Fatherhood Away from the Spotlight
Radcliffe has acknowledged the peaceful anonymity fatherhood currently offers him, since his toddler son has yet to discover the world of Harry Potter.
“For as long as I can just be his dad, and he won’t know me as anything else, I will maintain that for as long as I can,”
Radcliffe told The New York Times. This desire to preserve a normal relationship showcases his focus on family despite his iconic status.
Looking Ahead: The Impact of New Harry Potter Stories
The new HBO adaptation offers a way for a younger audience—including Radcliffe’s son—to experience the magic from a fresh perspective, free from the shadow of the original films. As Daniel Radcliffe Harry Potter fans await the series, this passing of the torch marks a continuation of the beloved saga that will engage new generations while allowing Radcliffe to step back from the role that defined much of his early career.
