Daniel Radcliffe has spoken candidly about how becoming a father transformed his life. The Harry Potter star, who became a first-time dad in 2023, shared how fatherhood has led him to quit smoking and adjust his mornings to his son’s early wake-up times. Radcliffe, 36, welcomed his son with partner Erin Darke, and the couple has kept their child’s name private.
Radcliffe explained to WSJ that his body now wakes around 5:30 a.m. due to his child’s schedule. The young boy uses a night-light programmed to shift colors, signaling when it’s time to get up.
“My son has a night-light where you can program it to turn a different color at a certain time, so at 6:30 it will flick from blue to yellow and I will hear him scream: ‘It’s yellow, come get me!’”
Radcliffe described.
Parenting Essentials and Cherishing Memories
To manage his new lifestyle, Radcliffe has adopted practical items like warm gloves for the chilly school runs and silicone toppers for baby food pouches. He emphasized their usefulness:
“These things are a parenting essential that I feel more people should know about.”
Alongside this, Radcliffe has developed a fondness for capturing his son’s moments through photographs.
Concerned about digital memories fading away, Radcliffe’s partner Erin has taken on the task of printing hundreds of their son’s photos. Reflecting on this, Daniel said,
“The first year after our son was born, I was looking through my phone at all the pictures I have of him and I was like: ‘Oh, man, it just makes me sad that these are all just on my phone.’”
Erin’s effort has provided him with tangible keepsakes of their family life.
He added,
“And so for the last few Christmases and birthdays, Erin has been getting hundreds of photos of him developed. I’ve divided the photos into two piles, which are ‘amazing photos’ and ‘life-changing photos’. That box of photos of him would be my prized possession.”
Reflections on Fame and Parenting Hopes
Radcliffe shared his hopes that his son avoids following his footsteps into the acting profession, citing concerns about fame. Reflecting on his own childhood working alongside Rupert Grint and Emma Watson on the Harry Potter series, he acknowledged the effort everyone put into managing early fame.

“People often talk about me, Rupert and Emma and the Harry Potter kids in general as being a good example of: ‘See, it can all be fine,’ and yes it can be, but we all worked really hard on ourselves to make it fine,”
he said.
Radcliffe stated plainly,
“I honestly wouldn’t want my son to act or to become famous.”
Significance of Fatherhood in Radcliffe’s Life
Daniel Radcliffe’s experience of fatherhood has brought significant changes to his daily habits and mindset, suggesting a shift in priorities toward family over career. His commitment to preserving memories physically and his cautious outlook on fame highlight the profound impact parenthood has had on him. As Radcliffe navigates life as a father alongside Erin Darke, it remains clear that fatherhood has reshaped his perspective on both life and work.
