Stephen King Expands ‘The End Times’ Into Full-Length Novel

Stephen King is set to release a full-length novel titled The End Times: Volume One, expanding his previously published serial novella co-written with Benjamin Percy. The new edition, scheduled for early 2027, will deepen the narrative that follows Mary Poole, a determined newspaper editor striving to resurrect journalism in a post-pandemic society. This development marks another exploration of King’s interest in dystopian themes and the vital role of media amid fraught social conditions.

Premise and Themes of The End Times

The story unfolds in a world grappling with recovery after a devastating pandemic. Mary Poole, the protagonist, revives an old printing press and launches a small-town paper, aiming to rebuild truth and information amid chaos. However, she soon encounters darker forces that threaten not only the publication but also the fragile order of the community. The narrative echoes concerns about misinformation and societal fragility in today’s world.

King has acknowledged links to his earlier work, revealing in a Forbes interview that the setting

“essentially takes place in the world of The Stand,”

his acclaimed 1978 novel about a post-apocalyptic battle of good versus evil.

New Format and Additional Content for Readers

The novel version will be printed on an 8.5” × 11” trim size, offering a more extensive and tangible reading experience compared to the original digital and newspaper formats of the serial. Publisher Bad Hand Books also plans to include exclusive new material not found in the initial release, aiming to enrich the story and broaden its appeal.

Doug Murano, the publisher, emphasized the timely nature of the work, stating,

“The End Times is a deeply dystopian story with concerning similarities to the threats that America faces today,”

and highlighted the relevance of the media’s role with,

“The series tackles misinformation and the vital role media presented in good faith has within a vulnerable population. It’s exciting to bring this important story to an even wider audience through a full-length novel in a time where we need stories like this more than ever.”

Significance and Anticipation Surrounding the Release

With this expansion, Stephen King’s The End Times promises to engage readers who are interested in narratives exploring societal collapse, media responsibility, and the power of storytelling in difficult times. As the novel approaches its 2027 debut, anticipation grows for how King and Percy’s collaborative work will resonate in the current climate marked by uncertainty and the quest for truth.
