Terrence Howard Reveals Threat That Led to Iron Man 2 Firing

Terrence Howard recently shared details about a heated encounter with Hollywood producer Joel Silver during an appearance on the PBD Podcast, revealing how the tension contributed to his dismissal from Iron Man 2. The actor recalled a dispute over billing related to the film The Brave One, where he was not listed alongside lead actress Jodie Foster in promotional materials. Howard questioned the decision while attending the Venice Film Festival, leading to a charged exchange with Silver.

“Same thing happened with me and Joel Silver. I’m doing The Brave One and we’re at the Venice Film Festival, and some reporter out of nowhere gaslits me. And he says to me, ‘why isn’t your name above the titles with Jodie?’ And I’m sitting there thinking ‘Yeah, why isn’t my name above the titles with Jodie?'”

Howard explained that his attempt to challenge the billing order resulted in Silver confronting him to clarify the reasoning behind it. Silver made it clear that Foster was the star of the project and that if Howard received any Oscar recognition, it would be in a supporting category.

“So I started making calls, as if that was my right. And it wasn’t. And Joel Silver came and had a conversation with me. He’s like, ‘the reason your name isn’t above the titles is because you’re not the star of this thing. Its Jodi. And if you get nominated for an oscar, its gonna be for supporting actor, not best actor.'”

When Silver addressed Howard’s demands, the actor issued a strong warning in response, highlighting the tension between them.

“Okay, thank you for telling me that. Now I understand. But you have to remember I’m a man just like you. And if you ever talk to me in that way again, I’m going to knock your teeth out of your mouth.”

Following this confrontation, Howard revealed that he and Silver flew together on the same private flight, a situation fraught with discomfort. Less than a year later, Howard was unexpectedly removed from his role as Rhodes in Iron Man 2, an event he attributed to the fallout from this clash.

Reflecting on the incident in the podcast, Howard admitted that Silver’s attempt to reason with him was appropriate, but his own aggressive reaction ultimately led to his professional exclusion.

Actor Discusses Hollywood Blacklisting After Legal Disputes

Terrence Howard also spoke candidly about his experiences of being blacklisted within Hollywood, particularly following a lawsuit against the talent agency CAA over alleged underpayment for his role in the Fox series Empire. He described a rigid, unspoken rule in the industry that discourages public discussion of internal issues, a code he broke by filing the lawsuit.

“Oh, no. After I sued um Fox and Disney, you’re going to the Blacklist. Until there’s a new change of everybody inside of there. So you’re no longer on their main list of calling because you’ve broken the cardinal rule which is you never talk. you know, even if you’re being screwed over, you never talk.”

Howard further criticized the entertainment industry for being controlled by a few dominant companies, naming Disney as a significant power player. Due to Disney’s ownership of lucrative franchises like Star Wars, he explained how many professionals feel compelled to stay loyal to or work within these influential corporations. Consequently, anyone who opposes or challenges these studios risks being sidelined.

The actor expressed frustration with the system’s gatekeeping and power dynamics, underscoring his difficulties finding substantial new roles after his public legal battle.

Current Focus and Future Plans

Despite setbacks and industry resistance, Terrence Howard shared that he is focusing on personal growth and creative projects outside of mainstream Hollywood. He is currently working on writing books and aiming to forge deeper connections with others and with his own identity. This period marks a reflective chapter in his life and career, as he reshapes his path beyond the traditional expectations of the film and television industry.
